IMCI, are the inmates running the asylum?

I recently became aware of the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) and their CE rating system for boats and boating equipment. The idea is to certify boats and components for sale in the EU. Sounds like a noble idea but the only problem is, the board of directors is made up almost exclusively of manufacturers and consultants. How can they not use their positions to market their own goods and services to the detriment of others and the sailing community in general. I belong to profession organizations related to my field (process control systems) and I have found over the last 10 years as manufacturers gain more control of these organizations, there is more infighting over standards and more apathy from the end users because innovation and progress is impeded. There are a lot of yacht racing organizations worldwide. Mostly, they are organized by and for the multi-millionaires to promote not only yachting, but also their own business and financial interests. Even most of the small boat organizations are run by insurance companies or chandlers or some other entity that has conflicting interests. What we daysailer to coastal cruiser owners need is a single national or international organization that will represent us. Our voices need to be heard on issues that affect the quality of our sailing experience. Issues like boat operation safety, boat design safety, wetland access, rezoning for harbors, the environment (especially discharges). We need to become a “special interest group” with enough power to effect changes in law. Is there already such an independent organization? If so, I’ll join it. If not, how do we create one? Happy sails _/), (and Happy Mardi Gras!) MArk

CE Cerification

I believe you may be off base on this one. I know nothing about IMCI but am familiar with CE certification as I require it on my products to sell in the EU. The directives are drawn up by a committe and various councils at the EU and are designed solely to ensure safety of systems. IMCI is simply a company which is authorized to certify products that meet the standard, in this case the directives quoted at the IMCI site. This is similar to certifying ISO shipping containers where an international commmittee sets the standards and then certifies companies to certify the containers themselves. I doubt that IMCI has any say in the standards themselves but could be wrong. As far as organizations that support the areas you list, I am a member of Boat US and they do an excellent job of representing boaters at the national level I believe and are not tied to any manufacturers.

Merchandising

David, "Merchandising!" Reminds me of a line from "Space Balls". BoatUS is exactly the problem I'm talking about. See previous posts on "Evil Empire Takes Over BoatUS" and others related to West Marine's acquisitions. BoatUS is a sales company. Everything they do, though well intentioned, is to attract customers for sales. Whether it's products, services, insurance or financing, sales is their focus. That's a little like the NRA selling guns and bullets or the Sierra Club selling campsites. It's incestuous and we deserve better! MArk

I wouldn't go so far as to say everything BoatUS

is about sales. In fact I think its just the opposite. Why would they sell their retail operations. I believe BoatUS is about providing service and representation to millions of boat owners and they've been doing for almost 40 years. Their main charter is to be the largest advocate for advancing the interests of boaters . Its easy to be cynical in today's society, but I think they've done a pretty good job.

Surprised but not shocked

by the acquisition of BoatUS retail; like everyone I'm dismayed at the prospect of less competition in the supply lines. But my impression has always been that the core interest of BUS is the political, lobby, publishing, services, trade-rep side of things, and that retailing was the tail and not the dog. I live a few blocks from their headquarters, not that it gives me any insight at all, but their GPS coordinates place their webbed feet well inside the Beltway. I believe they are still tied to their founder, who would rather devote his energies to other things than retail competition with WM. (Again, this is only my impression.)

By their "dot" ye shall know them!

If BoatUS.com (commercial) became BoatUS.org (organization) and was totally funded by its members and controlled by executives and directors elected by the membership, then maybe I would agree. For now I'm in wait-and-see mode. MArk
