Since there have been a number of threads dealing with various aspects of the infamous Hunter OEM white nylon stuffing box, I thought I'd post a pic of the inards of this beast. As you can see, there are three rings (two nylon, one stainless) separating two rings of packing material. I could never find a way to remove these rings to repack the box without removing the coupler/shaft. That being the case, and since I never really trusted this gland, I recently replaced it with a conventional bronze gland that is easy to repack.

This gland came from

my 1986 Hunter 28.5 and I assume it is the original OEM gland that came with the boat. I also assume Hunter used this same gland on a number of its larger and smaller boats. While I'm no supporter of this gland (as I recently replaced it with a bronze gland), I never had any trouble with it other than it was impossible to repack without removing the shaft. I am also unaware of any problems these OEM glands other than normal wear out. I don't think these glands failed at any higher rate than other glands. As we all know, every thing on our boats has a lifespan, captain included...
