football players that were in the gulf of Mexico when their boat capsized. It was a power boat, but the lesson is the same- Know the weather...
the local newspaper had the story today of a boat that took off right behind these guys. Even though the weather report was clear about the cold front coming in and bringing severe weather, it wasn't supposed to hit till late afternoon. The guy in the second boat reported that around 11:30 am, wind kicked up whitecaps. They decided it was too rough for their 19 foot boat and turned around (took them 2 1/2 hrs to get back in rough seas). The boat ( 21 ft)with the players kept going.
The guy that was rescued was found clinging to the motor (around the prop!) on the overturned, but floating boat. He said he thought his friends held on for 12-15 hours before they drifted away.
The owner of the boat played for the Tampa Bay Bucs in 04 and 05. Maybe I'm making unfair judgements, but as a pro player, I assume he had some money (he definitely left a nice truck at the ramp). I just don't get why you would go 50 miles offshore and not have an epirb at the very least. They were anchored at the time the boat capsized, but we don't yet know whether they were fishing in a spot and got hit with a rogue wave, or were trying to ride out the storm. We do know the boat capsized before they put on life vests. They donned them while in the water.
I personally wouldn't go out of sight of land without an epirb and ssb. Guess they were braver than I...
Truly sad.
