If anyone remembers who i am... I'm doing great, things have gone well so far with only a few complications.. I'm in Swansboro NC, we have been dilly dallying around a lot. But i really have no time constraints so i don't care. I'm disappointed with the ICW. I don't know why, I'm enjoying my self but it's not fantastic, nor would i call it a once in a life time opportunity. This is probably dew to the weather tho.. I can say it has been getting better, and the surroundings are more "entertaining"..

Oriental NC was one of the coolest spots, awesome consignment store.. i would like to go back in the summer and work in one of the marinas...maybe

I can say we have meet some really great people, a lot of the older sailors are really enthusiastic about my choice to start sailing "full time".

We haven't been boarded yet.

I still need a small dingy motor... anyone have one for sale???

Thanks to anyone who has helped me along the way :)

p.s. I want a bigger boat already !!! lol who would have guessed

Why do I remember you Jim? And why are you so farth north so late in the year? You went right past my old condo between Morehead City and Swansboro. For years we vacationed on the island between Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle. But when I went south we went out the Beaufort Inlet and offshore. We skipped all of Georgia and most of Florida. But we did have to do some ICW in South Carolina due to weather. We did not take the time to visit many sites but it was mostly enjoyable. I also really like Oriental, spent a month there doing boat work. Spent eighteen months across the Neuse at Matthews Point. We went into Florida at St. Augustine and back out at Fort Pierce. Stayed out to Marathon Key. There is big water in the Florida ICW and we got caught in a storm, ripped the bimini. There are several nice stops along the way like Cocoa Beach. But you need to get going before it gets colder. Can't help from Ohio with a dinghy motor, two in the garage and one on the boat in Florida.

GREAT that things are going well!.. Oriental is indeed a really neat place! I could have spent days in that consignment shop! Really a pretty little town with friendly folks .. The "dragon eggs" made me laugh. Their newspaper is fun to read and gives a flavor of the area..

Yea Oriental was awesome.. My girlfriend and I were walking down the road with a couple bags of groceries and someone pulled over to offer us a ride.

This would never happen in NY, people are to scared someone is going to kill them. Everyone needs to lighten up.

I'm here so late b/c i had to keep saving money for the trip, that's really the only reason.

Forgot to ask, did you spend any time in Beaufort? That is probably my favorite ICW town. When in Matthews Point I would go into Beaufort for breakfast. Then over to Morehead City if I needed boat stuff. There is a great ACE Hardware there, a very complete chandlery.

I think you will like the ICW through NC and SC. We heard that Georgia and northern Florida were not so good. But should not comment I suppose since we skipped those.

What is your draft? We stuck several times in SC near inlets that shoal over. And I only draw 4'6". If you cross the inlets at high tide you will have no problem. Much more of that kind of thing as you go south.

Well, i really appreciate all the help..

-JackJ that is my 2nd to last stop b4 we store the boat at osprey marina, so we can come home for the holidays, so i will probably get a hold of you here in a few days..

-Ed Schenck, no we didn't go to beauford, but we stayed in morehead for a couple days waiting out a blow. Then the way out our friends "Kasidah" had a serious problem with there propellar shaft galley .. So we turned back around and they are now sitting in Russels boat yard waiting on some repairs.. O yea that ACE is a great place, i got some tools with money i earned in Oriental putting up a guys furrler.
My draft is 5' so i have to be careful. I have bumped some stuff but it was never anything i couldn't get out of... I don't have a depth sounder either so its a little hair raising at times.. To be honest i think a depth sounder would make me worry more than i do now.. As the old saying goes "what you don't know wont hurt you". Its not like those things give you much warning if your going to run into a shoal anyway..

HEY! made it to Florida, finally.. We went outside from myrtle beach and are now resting by Fernandina beach inside st Marys entrance. I'm happy we have made it this far, i was tired of motoring down the icw it takes so much time... We will probably continue to go outside till we get to the Okeechobee water way, then cross the state and continue down to the keys on the golf side.. Any suggestions ??

I'm still looking for a small dingy motor...

One suggestion would be to stay outside. Some of our best sailing was the Hawk Channel, that being along the south side of the Keys. We went in at St. Augustine and back out at Fort Pierce to wait out some weather. There is some sailing in the ICW, big water behind the Space Center for example. A lot of the Indian River is huge. We had nice stops in Cocoa Beach and Vero Beach. We stayed out to Marathon and then again to Tampa Bay.

Yea, my parents are renting a house in Marathon for a couple weeks in the beginning of Feb... So, i would like to make Marathon by then, hopefully we can.. I want to go down the Golf side b/c i here it is better. I hate to be in a rush, but i feel the east coast will be a bit too commercialized for my taste.. I also don't want to be in a situation where i can't find a place to rest or hide from weather, I'm broke and can't afford much.. Anyone have any input on what i should do ?
