I take delivery of my new 460 early December and would be grateful for any comment from other owners who have had larger Hunter yachts in charter. The advice that I would appreciate is the most likely things that could go wrong and what steps to avoid potential problems. Many thanks in anticipation.

460 in charter

I have my 460 in charter and have been pleased with the results so far. The company has kept the boat in good shape and taken care of many of the warranty items for me. Fortunately, the dealer is two docks down from the charter company so I have easy access to them for repairs that have been needed. You will not get rich chartering your boat, however the benefits I have gotten from the charter company include thorough testing (and warranty repair) of boat systems, advice and lessons from more experienced sailors, constant attention to minor problems, and I have easy access to the boat. I am not a veteran sailor so the advice and help I get from the charter company is very important to me.

George This is the answer

George, you asked the name of the charter company. That hasn't been decided yet. My question was probably badly phrased. What I wanted to know was WHAT PARTS OF THE BOAT ARE MOST LIKELY TO FAIL. eg anchor winch, dunny, steering etc and what steps should be taken to avoid them.

Electronics Most Likly to Fail

From personal experience after 3 years on a new P42: The VCR and the CD player will fail first. Expensive to replace. Our VCR was part of the TV. Of course, whey will fail after they are out of warranty. We have had trouble with the Autohelm depth sounder [will have to replace transducer this spring] the speed [water temp indicator is 15 degrees off] and 7000 autopilot. But a lightning strike four boats down at the marina is the cause of all that. Then any DC lights with dimmers will fail. You will have some sort of issue with your engine or generator related to the seawater cooling side. Eventually, one of the dozen or so water pumps on board will have some sort of problem, but that is routine and if you use your head you can figure it out. You will have some kind of electrical failure and the first thing you should do is check all of your gound wire connections. You will probably find a loose connection or corrosion is the culprit.
