Mast up storage with launch ramp access and no bridges between the ramp and open water is pretty rare in SoCal, and as someone already mentioned, this is some valuable real estate. I agree that such a huge percentage increase must be shocking, but in my opinion it has apparently been underpriced for a while. The same thing in Dana Point wound cost you $187.50, for example. There is no such place at all in Long Beach, Huntington Harbor, or Newport Beach that I know of. I don't know of mast up, ramp convenient storage anywhere in San Pedro either, but I'm not totally sure. You could put the mast down and take it to an RV/boat lot off site, but I bet it wouldn't be that great a bargain, and certainly not as convenient.

Stu's point is right on. They have no idea what the hell they are doing. $54 billion to drill a "chunnel" under the delta? They can also consider building desalination plants up and down the coast of Cal. for under $2 billion a unit.
There is really something wrong with this issue and it makes you wonder if the issues are money or polictico?

Wouldn't it be less costly to move the people and the businesses to Wisconsin? Just build a new city here and there, where there is plenty of water and space. Four, quarter million people cities would relocate a million people. That would reduce demand on all manner of resources in California and spread the problem more evenly around the country.

Winter storage in PNW
Last winter I paid for mast-up storage which included haul out, relaunch, bottom wash, and electric all winter. The charge was per foot, my monthly cost was $189/mo. for Oct. - Feb., there was one intermediate increase for the month of March, and in April it went up to $420/mo. for my 28 foot boat. There does appear to be a mast-up storage of some sort here, but as far as I can tell, none of the handful of boats located there have been moved for quite some time...

I don't think that getting rid of 1 mil people in Cal. is going to make any difference unless it happens to be the ones that don't work, don't pay taxes and use all of the resources available.

What I want to know is why the county is paying a guy to stand next to the automatic payment machine every Saturday and Sunday and collect the money for day use parking. When he is there, you can't use a credit card, it has to be exact change in cash. The machine seems to work fine for the rest of the week, other ramps use the machines 24/7, he isn't generating any income by being there, there is no added security through his presence, and he has to be paid to stand there for 20 hrs a week.

Thanks guys for the support. At least I have a rational answer for my wife, when if ever she finds out about the new rates. I have a feeling there will be plenty of spaces available soon. There are boats stored in there that have not been licensed since the turn of the millennium.
As far a people leaving the state, we are experiencing that already. Our school population has drop by 16,000 over the last two years. Of course we are continuing to built 250 new schools, all of the to be given away to charter schools.
Teacher friends of mine are also leaving the state for better incomes and/or lower cost of living. Three have moved to Oregon, one to Arkansas, one Psych to Tennessee, Carolina and another to Florida. In a couple of years I think it will be, ''Costa Rica here I come.'' There Ross I can afford to have my own dock built.
All major aeronautical manufacturers have move out of the state except Douglas. Hollywood is losing its studios and supporting businesses to other states and countries.
California has the highest tax rate in the nation. Sales taxes here are 9.5% plus what ever local taxes are added on. We have double digit unemployment of 11.5%.
What I'm trying to say is for you Easterners before you pack up the Uhaul and head, think twice.
There now that I'm done ranting, I'm going sailing to reduce the cost per excursion. I figure if I increase the number of times that I sail by 61% I can keep that cost the same. :dance:

What are boat club rates like in California, compared to marinas or boatyards? I'm a member of a yacht club in Toronto; instead of a slip I keep the boat mast-up on the trailer (though this week I've borrowed a slip
), and the our annual fees (membership + storage) are roughly US$600 for a 19' boat. And, we have to put in about 30 hours of club labour.All in all, a good deal, and the club's been fun.Sorry to hear your fees got raised. Marina Del Rey probably has a waiting list as long as your arm. We live in Coos Bay, Oregon and had to wait two years to get a slip.
Not so much...there are at least 5 vacant slips within eyeshot of my friend's boat, the concessionaire is raising the rates again, even though they can't seem to be able to keep the homeless people with no understanding of indoor plumbing out of the "secure, slip tenants only " bathrooms.

What was the name of the book?
I recently read Shackelton's "South" and "Sea of Glory". The 2nd was about the 1838-1842 US Exploration Expedition and how they went south and mapped two sides of Antartica and lot of Pacific Islands. In WW2 their chart of Tarawa from 1841 was the only one available. Both showed how good we have it and how, these guys did things because they had to.I just finished reading a novel with a setting in Manhattan, NY. It was a two day journey from one end of the island to the other during colonial days. (almost as bad as rush hour today)
