Not hitting anyone or anything and not breaking anything is a good day sailing. Open water is so much easier. Plus it gives you time to relax. Do you have telltails on the sails? If you don't go out and buy some. If you are going to learn, you might as well learn what is right.

Yes I have tales, and they blow all over most of the time, today was a whole different ball game wind was, is howling out there, before we went out is was calling 10,12 mph but I guarantee it was more like 20, we reefed the main no jib and still running just under 6 mph, little hairy for my taste, we sailed for an hour or so and pulled sails and motored and fish a little.

I bought my first sailboat, a Catalina 30, in the fall and had to wait until spring to launch it. In the mean time I read a very informative book on sailing.....Sailing for Dummies. Believe it or not, it is well written with lots of illustrations and easy to understand explanations. A friend of mine bought his 1st boat last year and I passed the book on, figuring I don't need it after 7 years of sailing. I know where I can get another copy if I need it.........

Cheers

Sailing for Dummies.
Yes. well written and easy to understand. I bought this for my girlfriend not long after we started dating and sailing together. Wasn't real sure, at the time, how that would go over. To my surprise, she really liked it and we are still sailing together after eight and a half years.

New guys don't know what reefing is, please explain these things, I needed it and if I didn't get help I may of died, no big lost, I'm good with that but please explain these Britain words and don't start me up on terminology. I must stop talking now or I will get upset. Almost 4 years now, working on theists how ever my dumb spell checker spells it. Can I ever win ? Reefing = fold bottom of main sail 1 foot down so it's doubled up at bottom, you can see the eyes in the sail to use, just keep looking, they are there, slows you down in heavy wind doing this. Go Bucs ! ⚓⚓⚓⚓⚓

It's always the unknown that gets me, I'm literally starting from nothing but a few books and you tube, I know nobody that sails I've never been on a sailboat, it's tuff to learn something from nothing, but I like it:)

I'm the same way. I sailed for the first time in March of this year. I still have yet to sail with someone experienced on board, although I have sailed alongside some of my experienced friends. I'm having way more fun than I should be.... So far I've only sailed inland lakes but we've got a group planning to go out to the Mississippi barrier islands once it cools down again.. Really looking forward to that.

I lived in Timberlake, Willoughby, Mentor, east Cleveland. Started 185th and Claire , Euclid ave then 200th then out to Lost Nation, the Courtland Gang. I live on my boat, very different to say the least. I'm good. I teach if you want, lots of girls here but you have one, good for you.

Can't do that here, 6 foot draft 600 pound fixed keel and sand bars that go out longer than a football field. Did you look up the Fitzgerald ?

I believe it. Sounds fun. My normal lake is large enough to hold a course for 15-20 minutes at 5 knots going the short way so I could make a sammich... But still.

I wouldn't use auto pilot down here cowboy, st Pete Beach. You have to look at the color of the water here all the time, there is sand bars way out where the dolphin swim and they are black here by the way, freaking think they are sharks pop up 4 foot away from you, heart stops beating for a second. So you must be west side Cleveland cause you didn't answer my question, it's cool, I have relatives that side. Maple Hts little Italy festival, my cousin was the gang leader there, he's in jail now and my little brother too. Walleye, I didn't spell that right but know the fish, they give a good fight, taste good too. Winds and storms and very cold weather lake Erie, I know this for fact, I lived there. Be careful cowboy.

SailNewbie,

Looks like you had fun. The wind along the coast of Erie is often different than forecasted. The mile or so along the shore is subject to on/off shore breezes. Usually a nice breeze for sailing along the coast. Did you make it out to any of the islands? Great place to sail.

No, kids were immediately sea sick, so I was solo the couple days I had and was too chicken to head out in open water alone with experience I have
