Traditionally, the hull number goes on the sail as well and is used to identify the boat, especially in races. Let's take a look at the dollars, though: Price of 6 or eight digits worth of numbers on a sail: $18 Cost to install on sail (labor): $40 Ensuring the right sail gets on the right boat(labor): $200 Making sure a customer never complains about getting the wrong sail with their boat: Priceless

Ken, hull numbers are usually used on small boats racing as one designs, but in big boats the rules are different-for local racing you can usually use any unique 5 digit number, but for more formal competition you need to get a number assigned by USSailing-you get the next 5 digit number in your region, no exceptions!
