I'm considering the purchase of a 1984 lancer 30 shoal draft.

I'm considering purchasing a Lancer 30.

I don't know much about these boats, or there reputations.

I'm interested to know how they handle?

What are their strengths?

What are their weaknesses?

I'd appreciate any help or advice.

The 30's

hull was designed by C&C, who has a reputation for fast boats. She is a bit small for a 30 at 8200 lbs with only ~3000 lbs of ballast. That should make her a decent light air boat, but perhaps a bit tender compared to other 30's. I have never sailed one. Those are just my opinions based on her specs.

The prices on them tend to be pretty reasonable. Be cautious if it has a sail drive, as parts can be hard to come by, including the hull seal, which could sink her if it fails. Other than that, there will be all the typical old boat issues to watch for...leaky ports...leaky chain plates leading to damaged bulkheads...etc...
