While doing my recent DC upgrade I was concerned about my alternator. MS was able to set me up with a 90A Int Reg alternator. I didn't want or need the external reg. I also followed his suggestion for connecting it direct to the batteries. Might want to consider that if your current one is a concern.

Back when I was in my early 20's, I used to buy internal regulator/rectifier blocks for car alternators for about $15. The first time I put one in, it took me over an hour to get the alternator frame back together with the brushes in the proper places. Then I figured out that the little holes in the brush guides would fit a tooth pic & I could use them to hold the brush springs compressed during assembly. After that, it was a 10-minute job to change a blown regulator/rectifier.
