Greetings, I'm sure several Yanmar owners have been thru this. The audible "Alarm" that sounds before you push the starter button to crank the auxillary has recently been coming on after the motor has been stopped and the key returned to the off position. At first it can barely be heard and over a period of minutes it gets louder. If the key is turned on and off the alarm goes silent but returns again. Someone guide me in the right direction. Moisture? Faulty temp or oil sensor? Bad Ground path? Thanks

Short

You must have a short in the panel. When the key is in the off position, the 12 volt power should be removed from the warning signals. Bill

I looked at the wiring diagram

Power (B+) voltage is present even with the key off. It's present at the red wire which becomes the red/black wire on the back of the cluster. I'll fax you the diagram if you wish. Try disconnecting the oil pressure sender...it may be defective. Call me at 1-386-447-1838 Karl

Wiring Harness

You have a short and it is probably in the wiring harness from engine to panel. It is probably due to chaffing were the main positive wire is shorting to one of the sensor wires. You can disconnect the harness from both sides and with an electric tester test for any continuity among the pin and socket connectors if you find any two wires that will give you continuity you have found the culprits. Remove harness and by visual inspection you may see where the insulation may have peeled off. There is always the possibility that the short may be on the panel side or the engine side but this wiring is easier to visually inspect. Don't forget to check the actual on/off switch. You need to take care of that now because it will get worse and to fix this at sea would not be much fun.
