If your Catalina didn't exist, what kind of boat would you own? A comparable Hunter or Beneteau? A more expensive Sabre or Tartan? Would you go for more keel, ala Island Packet, or less weight in J-Boat? Which boats interest you and why? Present your preference here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

West Wight Potter 19

If Catalina didn't make a 22' sloop I would be inclined to purchase a West Wight Potter 19. Why ? because of it's stability , design and ease of rigging, and cabin layout. Also it has made world cruises without a mishap in just about all kinds of weather. Plus this boat has been in continual production since 1949. So next to a Hans Christian I'd go for the Potter. Whatever fit my budget

I didn't buy my Catalina cuz I just *had* to have one. It was the right boat, for the right money, at the right time. If there was no Catalina? Well, I'd probably buy whatever boat made my heart pound (within the limits of my bank account). LaDonna

next boat

I'd consider the J Boats. They are well built, great lines and very fast. The cost would be offset by the rewards.I would rule out Beneteau, Hunter and C & Cs...None of which appeal to me. I now have a 380 (1998) Catalina. Now in the Catalina line, I would entertain getting the NEW Catalina 42 (with a centerline berth) OR the newer Catalina 40 (1999-2001). For now ----the 380 is fine!!!!

If there were no Catalina's . . .

Hey Guys and Gals: I would seriously consider a Pacific Seacraft or Erickson, because they are well made, and a Valiant because I like the way they look. ( Well, since we're in a world of hypotheticals, I figure money is also no object.) Melody

For a mini cruiser, I'd...

...probably end up with one of the finalists in my boat search from last year (from which a fine 1993 Capri 18 was the lucky boat). The top choices were: Precision 18, WW Potter 19, Hunter 19 (no longer in production), Windrose 18, Venture 17, and maybe the O'Day Mariner. For a mini cruiser, the Catalina Capri 18 is hard to beat.

how about a 22 nonsuch?

while where not looking at the bucks, the 22 nonsuch (for a couple) of day/overnight sailers seems perfect, and VERY easy to sail. Room galore, headand headroom, storage, and not trying to be a sleeper for 5 if 2 sleep on the galley table after it has been set up from being the dining salon!

Buy what sails best

I also own a J-24 it's a lot easer to sail,faster,and a lot better built.

I would try to find an S 2

I like the S2s. They are no longer in production, but they are a solid built boat. I also like the Allied Princesses and the Cals. Also very strong boats with good reputations.

perish the thought, but

I've been looking at an older Cal 25. It's small enough for single-handing, heavy enough for cruising, and fast enough for racing.

What , No Catalina

I think I would buy the boat in the last caption contest if there were no Catalinas !

Morgan

Probably a Morgan OutIslander. Something around 40 feet with a center cockpit. Have seen several with the same basic layout and very much appreciate the walk-in engine room, the aft stateroom and the overall salty appearance below decks.

How about an Endeavour 22?

I think I'd be willing to give up my Cat 30 for an Endeavour 33. A friend had one for many years, it was great! Beautiful, stong and trouble free!

J-Boat

Purchased a 97 C-36 MKII last fall. My wife's 2nd choice (my 1st) was a 88 J 37. Nice boat but 10% more money for a 88 boat.

If there were no Catalina 27

I'd want a Cal 27, an older Tartan or C&C (to compensate for the price) or maybe a Seidelman.

unthinkable

That's an unthinkable thought but I suppose if I had to choose I'd take a Island Packet - or maybe a Norsea

My choices

We really enjoy our 380, however if we had not got it---My choice would have been the Moody 46 or the Taswell 43, followed by the Passport or an Island Paacket (40).They all are high quality cruising boats.
