If it looks too good....

So we have been boat shopping and we came across a great deal . We found a $60,000 boat (Hunter 326, 1993) for sale listed at $21,000. So we figure that even if we buy it and flip it we can help pay for our new boat. I contact the seller via email and ask if it is still for sale. GREAT news, it’s still for sale. It is in Whitehorse, Yukon so it poses a problem. How am I going to see it to check it out. The seller says that it has no scratches or dents or rust and has never been in an accident. That is good because I would be concerned about buying a fibreglass boat that is rusty. The seller says I have a couple of options. “the first one is to come here and pick up the boat and the second one is to use a third party company to handle the sale.”
Well it is my lucky day! :dance:If there is a third party to do the work it will be easy for me. He goes on to explain that all I have to do is pay my money to the third party, I don’t even have to research this because he suggests a company that is all set up for this transaction. He explains that once my money is in escrow with this third party, they will ship the boat to my house where I will have 5 days to inspect the boat and finalize the sale. If I do not like it they will take the boat away and I get ALL my money back.
This is a no lose deal. I know from shipping our boat that it costs a $1000 to $2000 to ship a boat within Ontario. I cannot imagine how much it will be to ship from Whitehorse. The good news is he is a motivated seller. He will even throw in the cost of shipping.
There are a couple things I need to know though. Does it have a windlass and does it have an adjustable backstay. The pictures he sent do not show a windlass and as the boat has a B&R rig, there should be no backstay, let alone an adjustable one:doh:. Well it really is my lucky day as he emails me back and assures me that the boat does have these elusive features. On top of that he agrees to a reduced price.
We are so excited.:D I have sent him a message that we have a deal and that I will be contacting my bank and the third party he suggested to make arrangements. Unfortunately I think my bank will need a picture of the serial number plate for collateral purposes. I will inform him of this tomorrow. He should have no problem popping out to the boat to take a picture. I also think I should get a survey for the boat before proceeding, my insurance company insists. Maybe he knows somebody up there he can suggest.
Not sure about what will happen in the next couple of days but I suspect my bank and insurance companies will become a real pain, asking for all sorts of stuff:).

Re: Too good to be true...?

Now let's see. You found a boat that is worth 3x what it is selling for. They will spend another $2k to haul it to your house, you decide you don't want it and they are going to spend another $2k to haul it back.

I don't believe that you are actually considering this.

Here I thought all the really good deals of this type were in Nigeria! Didn't realize the Canadians were getting that desperate.

?? What is the purpose ?? Just for fun ??

What is the purpose of this thread? To tell everyone that "Caveat emptor" is paramount in dealing with used boats as it is with used cars or new partners? Do you wish to see how many crazy answers it will generate? From the tone you obviously don't believe any of this... a backstay adjustor without a backstay!
Which one of the five sailboats in the Yukon is reportedly for sale?
Nice avatar! Shows little, promises much... just like the thread!
Maybe it's the eve of the last winter snowstorm that made you do this? We should get a little over a foot to-morrow.

Re: Too good to be true...?

A fiberglass boat with little or no rust is indeed a find. The rest sounds like a serious bonus.

I had a doctor who lives near us fall for a scam involving a re-homing fee for a parrot for sale. People tried to warn him it was a scam but he was determined to get this exotic bird for a steal! He was lucky he did not lose that much money in the deal.

I would start demanding obscure things be added to the deal just to see how far they will go. I used to reply to all Nigerian princesses and deposed government officials in exile. I was supposed to go to Thailand once to help one invest in an Alpaca ranch. I had the guy, whose first name was "Engineer", agreeing to meet me at the airport in Bangkok with a limo, four Thai girls, and a dog of suitable size to feed all of us. I explained that dog was my favorite dish, but was illegal in the US. I also told him not to worry, that I would do the cooking and like any good south Louisiana coon ass, I always bring my own hot sauce.
I was going to meet another in Africa and on my way pick up my friend ( Odd Job from Goldfinger) who raised fighting cocks ( that made for some great double entendre discussion) and was the finest baloot chef on the planet. Every email exchange, they asked for bank info, and I just replied with more stupid questions about anything but the money. I attached ridiculous photos to every email I sent. Odd Job and his hat, Alpacas, baloot, me ( actually a pic of Robert Conrad), etc. I gave them the fax number at work and I received bank forms almost daily for at least a week. I wish they still sent those scam emails. Now I mostly just work when at work.

Bar,

Funny story man. They're out there & live among us.

The ol saying, "For every sucker, there are two born to take him".

If you do talk to him, ask if he has any other boats for sale.

Re: Too good to be true...?

In another website forum a few years ago, one of the members got the infamous "Nigerian" email. He posted his entire exchange, and it was hilarious. He strung the scammer along, even getting him to do things like paint words on his chest and email a photo of it.

I take it the OP knows this is a scam. Play with the scammer a while, and please share!

Re: Too good to be true...?

If it sounds to be good to be tru, it probably is. Last time I checked, fiberglass didn't rust. This being said it should be quite simple to find anythng made out of fiberglass with little or no rust.
