I have a 1993 18hp Volvo diesel model 2002 engine. I am trying to figure out how to adjust the idle. Right now it idles at 750 rpm and according to the manual it should be 850rpm. I have the owners manual and the repair manual and neither have instructions on this adjustment. I asked a Volvo dealer but he had no idea how to do it. I can see a set screw with a locking nut on the throttle housing where the throttle cable connects on the engine, but I am not sure if that is it. Can anyone help me?

Same for me

Hi Norm, I checked my 'idle' this weekend and it to is somewhere from 650-750 which does shake, so when I let it idle (before and after motor for a few mins) I have just been advancing the throttle in neutral - would love to know how to make the appropriate adjustment. Good luck! Ed

Did not work

I looked at the link you gave and found a person with a similar problem. The answer given was to adjust the set screw/nut on the throttle body but it did not work. The only thing it did was cause the throttle not to work. After I adjusted it, I advanced the throttle and nothing happened the engine continued to idle at 650 RPM, no power. I adjusted the screw back and the throttle worked fine but it still idled at 650 RPM. Any other ideas? Norm

The screw that you are looking for

will be at the end of the arm that the throttle cable pulls. It will be resting against a stop and when the throttle is opened it will move away from the stop. It will have a nut on it which you must loosen before you can turn the screw. Be sure that you retighten the nut.

It Worked

Thanks, that worked, although I had to install a longer screw. It appears that someone took up all the adjustment trying to increase the idle. I thought that screw was just a stop for the link. Norm
