OK here is a silly question or may be not so silly I bought a hunter boat named Circe. She is a dream boat and very pleasant to sail.
She is a 1983 33' Hunter Hull ID number
QUE33001M83E
So I Broke it down
que = who built it 33001 is production model or serial number m model year format 83 is year e is mounth ( dec)
So I have a boat built by ??PRUDEN WELDED BOATS?? production model 33(I assume it is the Length of the boat) hull 001 built in 1983 in dec?
according to uscgboating.org i do. or do i have the 33001 boat built in 1983 by hunter (must be some kinda record year to lay that many hulls)

Your Hunter 33

That is a series-2 Hunter 33 designed by my dad, circa 1978-1982. If I remember right, Quest was an offshoot of Hunter making some of the Hunter models available as owner-finished boats. (Do I have that right? Anyone?).

Your HIN indicates it is a 33 model, #1 of the production series, built in December 1983. The '33' doesn't always indicate the model of size of the boat; in your case it probably does. The three-letter code doesn't always have to resemble what it represents either-- the original Cherubini Boat Co.'s was 'CBC' but the more recent Cherubini Yachts incarnation's is 'CVJ'. 'CBC' was unavailable (since they don't get reused) and others had all the closer matches.

The production series can mean anything, from a monthly run (probable) to an extended series using the same mold before it was refinished, or anything else. There isn't a fixed standard and some boatbuilders varied how they used the numbers even on the same models. The most important point is that, if it says 'M', it's a model-year designation, that the model year is given, and that the number is unique and decipherable (by someone).

Quest did not have a very large production run and so the #1 might have been frequently recurring-- i.e., if the Quest boats' series changed as often as did the Hunter ones (not guaranteed either way) then there might have been frequent restarts of the series numbers, leaving us with many '#1' Quest boats but not so many, for example, #20 Quest boats per series.

The 'M' is for 'model-year-code designation. Your boat was built in the '70s. The year and month are missing. It may have been filled, ground out, damaged, etc. Or, the factory could have made a mistake (see above where I explained how they apply numbers).
