All, It’s my turn to sponsor our monthly “Fun” race here in Kaneohe Bay Hawaii. We usually do the standard race around a few buoys. I’d like to set up something unique. Maybe like a scavenger hunt. Anyone have any ideas? Semper Fi! Dan

Beach Ball race

Get a bunch of beach balls, number them 1 through 5, fill them partially with water, scatter them about the race area, race to retrieve. Total the numbers on the balls; high number wins. Mark Major, s/v Lesismor 86H23

Turn Around Race

Several times I have raced friends to a mark and when the first boat rounds it all remaining boats do an immediate about face and race back to the starting line. If your goal is to be first you can see there are ways to cheat by lingering on the way out and putting it into gear on the way back. However, if everyone races in the spirit of fun it is interesting to find the faster boats on the way out always seem to catch up with the slower boats on the way back and it is never a given that the slowest boat going out has a big advantage on the return legs. Happy racing.

The Race

I participated in a race where all boats raced to the first mark to recieve directions for your remaining marks. All boats went to different marks after the first one. The marks were laid out fairly for all boats as was the finish line with equal distances. The tricky part was most boats were on different points of sail to their last mark, then converging for the final run to the finish. It was fun, especially the run to the finish. A lot depends on how big a bay or area the course is laid out in. And also how big and how many boats are racing. Ken

Envelope please

I participated in a fun race once that required some "nautical education" along the way. Each skipper carried an envelope with a time inside. After the start, he was required to jump overboard at his determined time and the crew had to "save" him without him swimming. (for the ocean you might what to use a bumper!). Also in the race, boats were required to to "hove to" for 5 minutes and not touch the sails. Added fun was the fishing. For each fish caught, a time allowance was provided. The hilarious part came on day 2 when boats had to start from anchor (fouled or knot!) Thank Dodd on Vesper Light for these great ideas-they were his!
