I've an '81 22 swing keel. Been out about twenty times in the past two months and five of those times have had about 15 oz. of water collect in the bilge next to the keel cable rubber hose. By laying dry rags against the hull in various places before sailing and then checking for wetness after sailing, I've determined the water is not coming from any of the hoses or valves but is coming from aft and flowing from somewhere down the starboard side hull under the cockpit to collect in the bilge. I thought perhaps the lower fitting holding the rudder had an occasional leak but a dry rag put under the bolts inside remain dry. The bolts holding the ladder do not come anywhere near the waterline so I eliminated that. Has anyone had any experience with a leak coming from somewhere aft ? Boat is bone dry at the start of every sail. No water collects at the dock. No rain water gets in either. Any ideas/experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.

Gudgeon Bolts

Don't give up on the lower rudder bolts just yet. I think I have a leak there too. My Cat 22 is a 1986 model and the nuts for those bolts are in the aft starboard storage area. Mine is dry too. But I think that the water is going in between the two fiberglass panels that make up the transom and leaking at the bottom of those two panels below the storage area. So the inside seems dry but the water is going in by the bolts and down before getting inside to the nuts. I don't get water every time I sail but I do get it when I use the motor at a higher speed and the back of the boat settles deeper in the water. I just pulled the boat for the winter and intend to scope this out some more. Randy

some ideas

I had problems like that in the past. The main clue that finally helped find my leak was that the bilge was dry when the boat sat at mooring and got wet during a sail. One of the bolts holding the motor bracket was just at the right level that it was dry when nobody was on the boat and just under the water line when the crew was aboard. Trial and error with marine caulk showed the culprit!! I did it up right when the boat came out for the year.

Randy - Thanks for the tip

I plan to investigate this possibility this weekend.

Darn Leaks

I have a 1982 C 22 and I had the same kind of leak and it was the lower rudder mount through bolts. I removed them & resealed them with 3M 5200 and now the boat stays dry every time. It took all summer to fine that leak.

Gary and Micheal - Thanks

Thanks for the info. I'm not glad to hear of leaks in other boats but I am glad to get the benefit of the your experience/knowledge. This is a great forum to share info and help each other out with our boats. Thanks again.

Up Forward

Dennis: My 75 Cat 22 had a water in bilge after sailing problem when I bought it 3rd hand. It was solved by sealing where topside joins the hull right at the bow. These older boats did not have a satisfactory tie there. Now it has a tie (which Catalina Direct can supply as a "Stem Reinforcement Kit") within the hull between the bow ring and the forestay, plus some selant which has held up fine for the past 3 years. Without this hardware tie between fordeck and stem, the forestay pull bent the underlying plywood enough to allow a space between hull and deck which sucked in water with every high wave. I've read that leaks thru stanchion holes, cabin windows, and other hardware, can also be a source for water that ends up in the bilge. Some say you can find them using a hose on the outside, while looking everywhere on the inside, but it may not be easy. Good luck. Dick

Things that seem like leaks

I have found that the Catalina 22 has a tendency to collect a lot of condensation in various parts of the hull compartments. When you sail, the boat motion shakes all the small amounts of water into the bilge. Unfortunately, there seems to be little opportunity to vent the area between the hull and the inner liner.
