When you use a 48” IDA sailor rudder on a H260 do you need the safety of the shear pin? The stock rudder is balanced so when you pull it into position it doesn’t try to float up, but if it gets the slightest bit out of fully down it pops up. It would seem that the IDA rudder being nonbuoyant , would stay down with a tight downhaul and tightened rubber discs. If the downhaul line stretches slightly, the rudder would angle back a bit ,causing a noticeable change in the helm ,but you wouldn’t all of a sudden have the rudder pop up and lose all steerage. This seems reasonable but maybe I’m missing something ? The rudder is new so we have no experience with it and I found putting the pin in the old one a pain.

My take or 2 cents

I've had two IDA rudders on my 260, but that's another story. We find that the rudder with a tight down haul is just fine, just tighten the locking lever (bolt). LKYusnret Baums Rush
