The boat i was given recently has a motor that seems to work despite its rust. I only ran it for about 10 sec. I wish to go ahead and pull it and rebuild it due to its immersion in fresh water. a photo is attached, and a link to a high res photo is below. This is a GAS motor with 2 cyl, carbed not injected, simple non-computerized spark too. This is prob a stock motor on this boat, an Ericson 27 http://www.helpmenetwork.com/images/P2222953.JPG

Definately not a Vire...

A Vire is a one-lunger. This is a two-cylinder gas with a Delco starter/generator. It looks so familiar, but I just can't place it. I know I've seen one; possibly in an old Bristol.

But Atomic 4's...

...were 4-cyl motors. My brother got an A4 out of a Sabre 27. Hmmm?

I think it is a Volvo Penta MB10A

Definately not an Atomic 4 - I had one. The green paint on the engine looks like the Volvo characteristic color. I downloaded a bulletin (see link) and it looks very similiar. The MB10A 2 cyl 15hp appears to be of the early 70's vintage- perhaps that is near the age of your Ericson 27? Let us know if I am right....

if it ran

it may not need to be rebuilt,if it was "pickled" when it can out of the water it may be ok. I agree with Rich it looks like a volvo engine. The real answer here is you may not be able to get the parts to rebuild the engine, and if you can get it to run good you may want to keep it. The other thought is to repower with a newer diesel engine. Good Luck !

news

thanks for your help, I have compared the MB-10A sheets with this motor, its a match! I have also found sources for new bearing and gasket kits for this motor. I prefer to rebuild it, I like the reliability & security of a freshly rebuilt motor... :) Ill be pulling it this weekend, strip it down, have it's block and head cleaned and measured, re-bored if out of spec, re-honed if not, ect. Ill post after rebuild picts. :)
