ID this caulk

For the longest time I have been putting off re-caulking my ports. Now I know why. It took me well over an hour to get this one ring off. I noticed that there were two types of caulking used. The main white stuff and a more opaick looking stuff like what one would use in bathrooms.

Can anyone ID the type of caulk used and other than elbow grease, what would be the best way to get this off the ring and the fiberglass?

When I redid mine on the C27 I used a paint solvent, Interlux 433 that worked like magic on what I believe was butyl tape.
When I replaced the rings I used Butyl tape.
I was so pleased on how easily it removed the seal I posted a short video on YouTube.

A sharp chisel and some elbow grease will get it off, be careful of solvents around plastic. Cannot tell what type of sealant it is from a photo.

Thanks guys. I have a chisel and started to clean the ring. Used a very small portion of Acetone on the caulking only and it took some of it off.

Dave, I have the 795 already to do the new caulking. Thanks for the info on the Debond. Looks like it should help get the rings off the boat easier.

I strongly recommend removing the whole port and resealing the whole thing. Success with just doing the trim ring is not very good in my experience. I know its a pain but it is more of a pain to have to go back and do it again 6 months.

If you have one of those Oscillating Tools use a caulking tool to help get the trim ring off. The video I did shows this and a couple of other methods for getting the trim rings and portlights out. I average about an hour per portlight removal when I have done them in the past.

Wonderful. Yes, I will do the whole portlight. I am just starting with one port to see how to proceed. By the time I am on the last port, it should be down to 3 minutes. LOL

That was your video? What was the second can of solvent used? He never mention what it was.

Yeah that is me, not the best video but I am learning. I used some acetone and alcohol, I prefer using mineral spirits for clean up but was out that day. And yes your speed will improve, by the time you are done you will be a pro. I have done 40-50 boats over the years and I learn something new on each one no two are alike but thats what makes it fun.

Just noticed the KF6BL, KJ4WXF here I have a icom 710 and 718 aboard but do not get the west coast very often

Well, thanks. I did enjoy the video. I saw the comments on the audio so I will not say anything. LOL

I was planing on putting my Kenwood TS-50S on the boat for my coastal cruising, but the radio crapped out on me. Tried to have it fixed and the guy did nothing to it but charged me for it. So the radio is in a box ready for listing on eBay. That ruined my plans for HF at sea. :(

Yeah that video taught me the importance of good audio. I have fixed that issue so hopefully future ones will be better.

Bummer on the radio, maybe you will get lucky and find a affordable replacement. Nothing like using the radio offshore, all that background noise goes away and you can really hear those distant stations.

Hey Chris no sorry I do not have a 2 meter radio yet. It is on the list but not in the budget right now. Nice to know there is another ham on a boat in the area.

LOL yeah you are right they are cheap maybe when work picks up this spring I will look into getting one.

Brian, a tip I heard from an old salt once, to remove a caulked think, was to use guitar wire, the kind with the ridges, as small a diameter as you can get. Use it like a hand-held band saw between the piece you are trying to remove and what it's caulked to. (Don't know if I made it clear what I'm talking about. :confused:)

You want a "G" string. :D

Some G strings are wrapped, so are not. And I got what you said JSG. LOL

Winkfish, I know exactly what you mean and I even thought of it but would have to ravage my guitar for a string. LOL But I am sure it will work without major issues. Just wear good gloves. LOL
