Is it reasonably possible to get a 5 ft draft through the ICW from Miami to Marathon or is the only option Hawk Channel. I have sailed the Hawk Channel but would like to cruise the other side. Charlie

Yes, it can be done

Watch the tides & stay in the channel...I draw 4'6" and stir up a little sand in a couple of tight places, but it's a much nicer cruise with more interesting anchorages. I cross over to Hawk channel under the Channel 5 bridge (65'), but you can continue on & go thru the 7 mile bridge. Al

I have a 5' draft and "plowed" through quite a bit of sand from in the middle of the channel once SW of Key largo.. It is also not easily sailed either... although sort on anchorages till SW of Key largo, the Hawk channel has given us some of the best sailing every as you have the land on one side and the reef on the other which gives you a flat ride... Can Do!

Brian, We do the Miami to Key Largo race every year with a 5 foot fixed Keel on a J-boat. Steer clear of the Feather Beds (stay in the channel) and keep inside the other markers and you should be fine. Be prepared to motor in some areas since the channels get narrow and you may not be able to sail them. For me, once I'm south of Key Largo I shoot outside at Snake Creek and go down the outside in Hawks Channel. If you need to stop for a break in the Key Largo area one great spot is the Upper Keys Sailing Club on Buttonwood Sound. If you do look me up. Just ask the Dock Master he knows how to find me. I did it in a 33.5 Hunter with 4.6 draft

In 2000 I bought my 33.5 Hunter from St.Petersburg to FLL via Marathon and the ICW.Had no problem at all, went outside at Miami to FLL.
