While reveiwing the ICW Cruising Guide there is a Pungo Ferry fixed bridge in North Carolina on route 1 with only a 60' clearance. I read that all fixed bridges were 65' except one near Maimi. Our Hunter 430's mast, with instruments, is 63.5'. Is it really 60'. If so, do we need to take Route 2 through the Dismal Swamp?

My Guide says 65 ft.

"The Intracoastal Waterway"...Jan & Bill Moeller, pg 39 "Route 726 Highway Bridge. Fixed. Vertical Clearance , 65 feet." I can call them next week and make sure , if you plan on taking the Canal, call and make sure it is open , we are still in a drought down here. Later Cecil

My Guide says 60 ft.

"Chartracker" by Katherine Giampietro Redmond says that the Pungo Ferry (Route 726) fixed bridge between st mile 28 and 29 is 60 ft on page 38. Hopefully Jan and Bill are correct. We will be travelling the ICW next fall if we hit the lottery or 2005 when I retire. I have been reading up on the ICW so I can understand articles about it and try to ask reasonable questions.

Web Search Info (the bridge is sinking!)

Came across a cite for you on the web: http://www.cannyachts.com/cannyachts/cannyachts_6.html In the web article "Island Bound Strategies --- Three Good Ways of Getting There" they said the Pungo Ferry Bridge reportedly has sunk somewhat on its pilings" and they "tinked" their 64' VHF antenna on it in May of 2000." They also commented about the effect of winds so you might find this interesting reading. Interesting log book entries (didn't mention bridge): http://www.geocities.com/early_out_site/Log_May_2001.html I can't imagine an engineer would design a bridge of this size that would "sink"!

My 40.5 Says 65 Feet

Yaga, with a mast head height of 63.5 plus 2 foot of VHF antenna, passed under the Pungo Ferry bridge in Jan 2001 and again in Aug 2001 with a couple of feet to spare. The water appeared to be at a normal level. However on our way north her antenna touched several 65-foot bridges in the ICW between Melbourne and Titusville Florida so on the return trip, we went outside on our way south from North Carolina to Ft. Lauderdale.

The bridge in question is actually located in the city of Virginia beach , Va I heard when they built it the mud was alot thicker than the engineers thought? I also heard that the bridge is "floating in the mud" If I had a mast that tall I would call the city engineering office , they will probably give good info . The city would probably want to avoid another expensive law suite like the one a couple years ago with the inlet depth being wrong and a million dollar stink pot (on the way to miami boat show) getting broken apart on the sand bar the city is supposed to keep out of the inlet.
