I'm looking for an adaptor to connect my Icom M31 handheld vhf to the mast mount antenna. The RG-8x cable has PL259 plug. I found an adaptor with SO239 to fit the RG-8x but not sure what the HH side is call. Doesn't look like SMA connector.

I recently did the same thing. I contacted icom on the phone, tech on the line was very helpful, sent me email with photo of adapter that screws onto the h/h in place of the rubber antenna and the icom part #. Used that info to order the part at local West Marine, very helpful there also. Sorry, don't have specifics any more but whole thing was pretty painless nd made an amazing difference in radio reception.

Careful what you wish for.

The benchmark connector on your hand held is not intended to withstand the strain of constant movement by the coax cable. It can break much more easily than you may know.

As previously stated hooking up your portable directly to the antenna cable using a hardware adapter will probably cause your antenna connector to break. A better solution is to get an adapter with a much smaller diameter cable between the two ends. I do not know what the connector on your radio is but the cable below will work on my M88. I am sure you will find the cable with the right connector for your radio on that page. The boat side of the cable would be an SO-239 connector. Most marine portables still use the SMA female as the antenna connector. Even with the adapter cable caution must be used. Hope that helps.

Dava390, would it be possible to send a picture of the adaptor you have? Thanks.

Don, thanks for the link but it shows the SMA connector. My M31 HH side doesn't look like SMA.

Ken. The link is only an example. Contact ICOM and ask them what kind of antenna connector you have. Armed with that info you can go to the site contained in the link and order the correct cable.

Dava, thank you. Looks like i'll need two adaptors m31 to bnc male and bnc female to SO239. I could also rewire the cable with BNC female. :)
better yet ask Icom. :D

That would put even more strain on the connector.

Don, I sed that adapter all summer. I threads onto the top of the radio and seems secured firmly to the radio casing. Are you saying it will cause strain on the antenna wireing inside of the case ,below the threads?
