Icebox, Refrigeration, what's been done?

I think the standard design was draining the ice box to the bilge.
I have wondered why they did that in the past, and am thinking the bottom of the ice box is too low to plum it to the sink exit? Below or too close to the water line?

Several times in july, I would visit my boat and the bilge was filling up.... I would think I HAVE A LEAK!!
It was the ice for the beer melting.

Could this cooler design be installed in the bilge?

I didn't do it on my Vega, but on a Tartan 27 I had a cold plate installed with the compressor on the shelf just below the ice box.On a Vega the compressor could be in the strbd locker just aft of the ice box.
