Icebox drainage problem

Several weeks ago the ice box drainage on my 1991 Catalina 28 became plugged, leaving water in the bottom. Despite using a plunger and Liquid Plummer it remains the same. The name tag on one line under the head sink says "head inlet and ice box drain", but open or shut, no water drains out of the ice box. What can I do?

Box drain

1. NEVER use Liquid Plumber on a boat. What were you thinking?!? 2. Was the thru hull open? Any other valves on the line (between head inlet and ice box drain, there might be one)? 3. Disconnect the hose from the icebox drain point and see if it's blocked. (Suck or ponge the water out from inside the box first) (i.e., it's easier for you to take it apart on YOUR boat, than it is for us to figure out here on the internet what is blocking your hose). Good luck.

ice box drain

My 1991 Catalina 28 has a foot pump located in the head cabinet close to the sea cocks valves. We open the " drain " then PUMP the water out, this works good except for the last liile that we wipe out with a towel.. Good Luck Dave

Me too

Unfortunately Bruce all I can do is sympathize with you. Our 1972 27 has a similar problem and I spent half a day carefully taking apart the icebox drain line last weekend. The drain hole is only about the size of a #2 pencil body and runs directly into a brass fitting that looks as though it was "slopped" into the bottom of the icebox with way too much fiberglass. The brass fitting has a screw in valve and then the line drains into a common outlet with the sink drain, presumably over the side via a seacock. The sink drains fine (as long as the valve is open) but the ice box never does. I'm considering closing the old (stock) drain hole and installing an alternate drain, re-running all of the drain line and starting from scratch. In the meantime I pump and wipe. Ain't life grand?!
