Ice going down the drain!

The ice we put in the stock ice box in our 1995 Hunter 336 really does not last long. If we put in a 10 lb bag, we need to add another 10 lb each day we are out. I put a loop in the drain line so the cold air does not escape but this seems like the insulation around the ice box may be a bit too small. Ice in our little Coleman cooler lasts twice as long. Has anyone re-insulated their box or is there another problem with the Hunter ice box in this model? Please advise.

too little ice or too much beer!

Actually, it doesn't sound like much ice at all - especially if the box was hot to start with. I would start with 3 or 4 bags/ blocks of ice. Also, are you putting in warm beer and pop or is stuff already cold? Also these big boxes don't work at their best when not filled with cold stuff -- too much air. try a space blanket on top of food/liquids to reduce the volume of the box that is cooled.......

Ice down the drain

Interesting. I have a 95 336. Do you mean "ice box" or the refrig/freezer combo? I have the later with a gruenert fan/seawater motor. No problems.

Curious

Ice Blanket

We have an ice blanket I got from a vendor out in Seattle.I will forward the info if I can find it. It really works. A block and 2 bags will last us all week-end. Another trick for beer is, we put it in a 2 gallon plactic bucket, [in the cooler] and fill it with ice. Keeps the Coronas icy cold!

plug

I put a plug in the drain to help keep the cold water and ice in the box. Then pump it out into the sink later to keep the water out of the bilge.

I have the same problem with my Hunter 40!

I'm sure from my research that its just due to very poor if any insulation from the manufacturer. Its pathetic that I have to spend so much on ice !

anyway I've investigated adding insulation around the box but its very difficlut to get to. A major job in fact for sure.

This weekend in desperation I bought a cooler from walmart and stuffed it in the ice box. There was still ice in the walmart cooler on the 4th day. Not so for the rest of the boat "ice Box" .

I think I'll look into the "blanket" mentioned in a response to your post here

Cool Suggestions

First, pre-freeze everything you can. Steaks, OJ, lemonade, water. Freeze your water in plastic juice jugs. When the ice melts, you drink it instead of letting it go to the bilge. Also, when you first get to the boat, the ice box is hotter ' blazes and the first bag is a "sacrificial bag". You might want to open up the boat and let it cool off before moving stuff from your icechest to the boat ice box.
A third idea is to keep an ice box of drinks on board for "frequent openings" so you are not opening your boat ice box all the time.

Remember, block ice last much longer.

Now the last idea, oh no..here it goes..I'm going to start a big discussion (which is in the archives already)..Do you dare use dry ice? Oh those dangerous noxious fumes! Some swear by it, other swear at those that use it. Use the first 3 ideas and enjoy your summer.

block?

James:

Have you tried a block of ice?

We did this for a while before we got refrigeration. I found a large container (milk jugs will work). I would freeze these at home in our freezer. Place them in the bottom of the ice box and see how long it works.

You should also be sure that you lid is sealed to prevent air leakage.

Ice box

On my H333 the Hunter deigners opted to put the ice box right next to the engine compartment, so they share a common wall. When I motor, it heats up the ice box. I've looked into adding spray-on foam insulation, but there's no access to the compartment without cutting out a panel.

more ice

I agree that 10 pounds of ice is not really enough for the size of the ice box on a 336. Eapecially if the things being put in it are not pre cooled, I used the frozen at home jugs of water (under shelf) and 20 pounds of ice, will last all weekend. I also had a small battery operated fan that helped to keep the temp even in the box. The idea about the ice blancket sounds good also. You may want to check the seal on the lid also to make sure it is sealing correctly (maybe latch needs adjusred?) For what it is worth have always thought that before I put refrigeration in that boat I would put an ice maker !

Insulate the engine compartment

Hey Steve - why not insulate the wall inside the engine compartment instead?

Should produce same effect :)
