I have been thinking about building a custom fit ice chest to fit a spot in my boat that is currently unused. Anybody ever try to build or build and ice chest? Any opinions or thought would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..... frank

Frank, I built the ice box for Bietzpadlin.

I used 2 inch thick extruded styrene foam and Great stuff canned foam for gluing it all together and filling the voids. Mine is four inches thick and lined with light fiberglass glued to the foam with 3M spray adhesive and painted with white pigmented epoxy. The top was cutout after the whole thing was assembled but before I had glassed it. The top is tapered all around and has a wood topping on the foam. I use jugs of water frozen at home for ice and when it melts for drinking and cooking. I am going to the boat today and when we get back from an over nighter will post some pictures.

Another option . . .

you might check the Johns-Manville hard foam insulation that has foil on both sides if they still make it. I used that for a hot tub cover and it seemed to be pretty efficient. As I recall it was about 2 inches thick in a standard 4x8 sheet.

Picture of interior of Icebox

first loaded and in another post almost empty. This shot has 9 gallons of ice or water and an 8 quart bucket of food and three food boxes.

Almost empty

Took out most of the jugs and dumped them in my water tank.

Thanks All

Thanks for the ideas folks. I may go down and do some measuring tomorrow if I can get on the boat. Storm surge was high enough today at high tide that there was 18 inches of water over the dock. will probably be higher in the morning.

Frank, Don't be a stranger. I built mine when I rebuilt the boat

But I can answer a lot of questions that may come up when you start this project. I didn't have the internet or this forum so I had to muddle through on much of what I did. ;)
