I just bought a 1979 C27. What a sweet boat. But tell me, where is the water from the ice box suppose to go after the ice melts? Into the holding tank? Out a thru hole in the hull? Mine remains in the ice box and does not drain out. Do i have a clogged line? Cant seem to locate any type of drain valve... Any suggestions or remedies welcome. thanks, joe in Atlanta

must be a pump

Joe, there should be a hand pump or foot pump to drain the icebox. Mine is a hand pump by the galley sink that pumps the water out into the sink which then drains thru a thru-hull. Perhaps it drains into your bilge but the line is clogged? good luck. Steph

Trace it

You should be able to take a look at the bottom of the icebox and see where that drain hose is going. On my 1986 C27, I had a long piece of hose that originally just drained into the bilge - I put an old Champagne cork into the hose and drained it into jugs when I wanted - keeping any smelly water out of the bilge. C-27 Icebox Drain

The ice box drain should join the sink drain at a "T" fitting under the sink cabinetry. It should have a valve to close it as sea water can run up into the ice box if heeled over on starboard tack. If your icebox isn't draining either the ice box valve at the "T" is closed or the seacock (or the crappy volcano and gate valve that Catalina installed) for the sink is closed. Get your head under there and look at the valves.

kinked hose

I have exactly the same problem with my 1982 27'. On my boat the hose is kinked as it comes out of the icebox. About 2 inches below the icebox is an extension of the panel that the quarter berth cushion rests on.This has a hole in it for the drain hose to pass through. Unfortunately the hole is about 2 inches forrard of where it should be to line up with the hose. I am in the process of "adjusting" the hole but it is a son of a @$#* to get to. The hose does then go to a "T" fitting as Gary says. What bugs me is that it must have been this way from the factory. I guess nobody checked it there, and it hasn't been put right since.

Ice Box Drain

It's not the same boat, but the 1984 C25 drained through a hose that connected to the sink drain hose as described above, The difference was it had an inline one way valve to brevent back flow. This made it too restictive to drain freely, so I removed the valve without any subsequent problems.

Check the thu-hull.

The icebox in the '84 27 I had years ago drained straight to the thru-hull. But, when the boat heeled enough, seawater would come back into the ice box, so typically I would leave the thu-hull closed and just open it when the ice box needed draining. My '04 270 icebox drain loops up to just below the sink to avoid the back wash problem. To drain the ice box, there's a foot pump. (The same footpump was on the 27, but it was to pump freshwater to the sink - the 270 has a electric fresh water pump so the foot pump was freed up for the ice box drain.)
