It is no secret that the ice box insulation on a C30 is less than adequate. I would like to get some input on how others might have beefed up their insulation. I know Catalina Direct sells those insulators for the lid, was wondering about the effectiveness of those as well. Any input would be a help. Kirk Jockell S/V JoyRide C30 TRBW #2035

ice box

On my 1983 Catalina 30TR I insulated as much as I could. It was impossible (at least for me) to insulate and tape fully around the outboard side of the ice box. In addition I installed gasketing material on the top removable lid. I've also tried letting the melting ice drain or plug it to see the difference. You might wish to check the archives as I did. You will need to remove the draw assembly to gain some access. I have found that if I can precool the box beforehand it makes a difference and since I bring bottled water I freeze some of that as well with two blocks of ice.

Pink foam

I have a '77 C30. I am able to keep blocks for over a week in the summer. I bought 2" thick pink foam insulation from Home Depot and glued it all around, sides & bottom. I even glued it to the inside top. Where I couldn't put foam I sealed with chalking. I also drilled and shot expanding poly foam into areas I couldn't reach. The insulators for the lids help. I also bought one of those survial blankets and folded it over a few times to the shape of the ice box. Lay it over the ice in the box,it wil reduce the area you need to cool down as well as keep the warm air out when you open. Last summer I cruised for 2 weeks and still ha pieces of the original blocks when I got back. Also, put a loop in the drain hose under the box. This will form a "plug" as the ice melts and kkep warm air out.

Thanks Guys. I've got to do something. I can't keep the bride's Coronas cold without an adequate ice box. John mentioned removing the drawers for access. I can see that. Were either you able to get insulation on the outboard side of the box. Axel, I'm curious about where it was you injected the expandable foam. Could you provide more detail there. The insulators for the lid. I'm guessing your speaking of the ones available at Catalina Direct. What did you fill those up with? This is all appreciated. Kirk C30 TRBS #2035 JoyRide
