I'm in the process of converting my ice box to a fridge. I read some forums about it and now on the go. I found out, as said in the forums, that there was some insulation missing at the bottom, well those who said that where right, specifically on the rear left side but most of all, the top part. There's a part that can be taken off, that covers the entire box, that had tge stuff they use in flower shops to stick flowers for funeral homes !!!

I'm cutting 6" off the bottom, (the lady is sick and tired of reaching that low), wich will give me some room to add insulation under. I'll be moving it a little to starboard and to the back so I'll add an inch of insulation all around to make it 4" min.

My question is : Should I keep the actual insulation and cover it with new one or take it all off and go with new material ??? I'll be using insulating panels that as aluminium foil on both sides, found at Home Depot, R7 /inch.

Thanks for your ideas.

André

P.S. I'll put some pictures after my work will be done.

André,

I can't answer any of your specific questions regarding your Hunter 34, but I can point you to an excellent resource of refrigeration information.

Richard Kollmann is a retired marine refrigeration specialist and he maintains a website that is full of info. He will personally answer specific questions regarding the installation and maintenance of refrigeration in his forums.

He also has written two books that you may find useful. I bought the one on 12V and 24V refrigeration and found it to be excellent.

I have no connection to Mr. Kollmann or his website.

Check it out:

Andre’ .. Insulation question.. Best to put the foil facing the hot surface (to decrease the radiant heat transfer to the insulation as much as possible).. Optimally, the insulation package should be sealed so that water vapor in the air can’t freely get to the space between the foil and the box .. If you are going to use two layers of foil panel, one should be on the outside of the insulation package, and one inside; so, box wall, foil panel, insulation, foil panel would be great. Best to not use the old insulation.. new Styrofoam or a specialty insulation that will not absorb water is best. Pay particular attention to the frige wall that is “looking” at the engine space.. Best of luck.. Post some pictures when ya get a chance!
