Just came back from Bellport after looking at the ice boats on the frozen bay,we only get to see this maybe every couple of years or longer since the weather has been so mild in the winter the past few years.

Those ice boats really fly. We haven't had enough ice down here in 25 years for ice boating. A few brave souls still try for a little ice fishing.

Rad Many may not know that the "boats" in your first picture of #202&161 are of a class called skeeters and were used as a life saving unit that could go from ice to open water and back....Wooden boat magazine had a great article on them a number of years ago that is well worth reading.Great pics!!!

Those are beautiful Rad

It has been so long since I've seen them, we use to visit my wife's family on Chautauqua Lake close to Lake Erie in Mayville NY. Frequently we would see them and watch them fly. They weren't as fast as the snow mobiles on the ice, but a heck of a lot lighter and didn't go through the ice in the thin spots like the heavy motorized sleds would.
Thanks so much for sharing them, they bring back some beautiful memories.

Tom :)

IAN4781,
The pictures were taken in front of the South Bay Scooter Club, I believe there called "Scooters" and I was explaining that scenario to a friend today of how they can hit water and stay floating
I didn't think of it till later but I should have taken a movie clip cause they move at about 50 maybe faster in a good wind

Further to Ian's point, the Skeeters have no steering control to the runners or to a rudder - they are steered by sheeting the jib in hard or easing it. That's why they have the long bowsprits.

Very nice. Here in Syracuse, NY, there are ice boats almost every winter, though it's not as popular as one might expect. (Just a little dangerous)
