Lance, Yes I did
We couldn't get our schedules together, so he came down while I was offshore. He took my advice and advice from others here. He checked out the boat. The motor started and ran fine. The owner said they had the boat out the night before. Well, anyway, Scott went through the boat as best he could and all seemed well. Then when he asked the owner to move the boat about a 1/4 mile away where the water was a little clearer so he could dive and check the center board, the owner said "no".
Owner said he would not move boat unless Scott bought it first. I'm not sure of the exact wording, but I think it ended with a big FU. Scott was really pissed because it was about a 4 hour drive for him.
Anyway, he e-mailed me a few days ago about a boat in La. Seemed it had a lot of damage to it so he just walked away. This morning I get an e-mail that he put a deposit on a 1979 Catalina 30 in Corpus Christie, TX. He asked me a bunch of questions and I was too lazy to type back, so I called him. WE spoke for about an hour. The boat needs a lot of work, but do-able. The price was great. The motor wont start but it will turn over by hand. With the amount of work that has to be done, I suggested that he get the boat home to his shop if possible which he said is possible. Its difficult to get anything done on a boat 2 1/2 hours from home.
He seems very enthusiastic as well as talented. He is a young man with a mechanical engineering background. He is an inventor in business for himself No, he is not the Oxyclean guy, thank God!!!!. Anyway he has a shop that is set up for machining, fabrication and woodworking and he is also a motor head. WE discussed that most of the problems with the boat are time not money.
He is not well learned in boat repair or fiberglass repair. I suggested get the video on fiberglass boat building from Glen L Marine and the little booklets and videos from Gougeon Bros AKA West System Epoxy. They have great videos on fiberglass repair and blister repair. I havent used those vids in 20 years, I'm sure they have more now.
When he gets the boat to San Antonio, I can drop by for the day and help him get started. He seems like a really nice guy that REALLY wants to go sailing.
I told him I would call him back in the next couple of days and I will tell him you asked about him. I'm sure he will appreciate that.
