I subscribe to several sailing magazines and love to read about the new designs that are "just launched" but given my financial situation (even when the economy was good), I will never be able to buy one of these "new" sailing vessels.

I wish more articles would be written about older boats that would be on the market as a "used boat" (and in my price range).

I know Cruising World does have a monthly article about a "classic plastic" which I enjoy reading but wish there was more ink published about existing boat models.

I am a "diy" type of boat owner because it gives pleasure to work on my boat but it also allows my family to enjoy sailing that remains in our budget. I do really enjoy being part of this website and forum because of the info people offer.

The prices of the new boats is becoming more and more out of reach for an average working individual. Even before the latest "downturn". Yard prices are escalating just as much. One of the yards near me that used to charge 10$ per day in the yard for DIY, not charges 1$ per foot per day. So for most of us working type stiffs, I think the future is used boats, fix it yourself, or give up sailing.

The new day sailors that seem to get all the press start at $ 150,000 +/- a few thousand and than the sky is the limit.

I concur. I get so tired of reading about about boats I don't even want nor could I afford, I am giving up on my subscriptions even though I get CW and Sail for $10 a year. I think I am also giving up on Practical Sailor. It is an excellent publication, but so much of the gear they review is beyond my means or needs.

Perhaps i should go Good Old Boat, but I have avoided subscribing becasue that magazine is expensive. Kind of ironic that the mag for budget boaters is expensive while the mag for the wealthy is not.

Yes, but many of the articles are of the type that will end up saving you money. They often have articles on boats being refitted or modified. Also, the boats in the magazine are generally the affordable ones...

Second for Good Old Boat

I love Good Old Boat. It is worth every penny. Growing up sailing in the late 60's and 70's, reading GOB is like coming home.

There can be some seriously good opportunities in old used boats for people with the time, talent, tools and self discipline to do a good to very good refit on them. I rebuilt a 1968, 30 foot Islander and others here have refitted boats of similar size and age . The basic requirement is to ignore those who say you can never get your money back from all that is required to make an old boat modern and realize that if you select a hull form that pleases you, in a size that will meet your needs, then you can build a boat that fits your dreams and keep it for as long as you will continue boating and the rest of the world can take the hind most.

Two of my favorites are Professional Boat Builder and Good Old Boat !! I even sell photos to one of the "big" sailing magazines yet I still refuse to have a subscription to it..;) My wife thinks it's crazy that my photos are in three yet I don't get the mag. I can only read the same regurgitated articles so many times before I just cut my losses. For DIY's Pro Boat builder is great but hard to get and for the rest of us there is Good Old Boat.

If you're a Catalina owner Catalina Main Sheet magazine is also good.

Still, all in all, the best boating info can be found on the many sailing forums spread about the net. I have never not been able to find an answer on a sailing forum.:D
