Has anyone had an issue with his or her Hunter suddenly turning hard to starboard? I mean HARD. This happens under motor power only, 4 - 6 knots. The first two times it was under the auto pilot and I was told it was/is a bad clutch in the drive. The third time it occurred was when the drive was not even in the boat (so much for the clutch theory). I’ve only had my 380 since February of this year and this scares me *yks to death. Seriously, if your not holding on when it happens, you overboard or knocked down. Any ideas? Am I causing this or ... ?

OK, I'll bite if no one else will,

You don't say what the helmsman is doing when this happens. You do have someone on the helm then, right? You KNOW that most boats turn to starboard under power when the helm is free, right? If the brake isn't tight, it'll go. But you knew that,,,right?

You know Scott, it's been so long since I tried it

that I'm not sure anymore. Been looking at that post sideways since I put it up.

The other starboard

clockwise prop, forward gear, stern walks to starboard, boat turns to port. I have actually had the same experience in my 336, but both times it happened my wife was on the wheel. Hmmmmm. Once she told me the wheel was "stuck" as we went spinning around and I discovered she was holding it against the quadrant stop.

Maybe this?

My 376 does this if someone uses the VHF radio. At first we had no idea of what caused it then we realised. I guess the radio frequency energy from the antenna gets into the mast cable for the instruments and thence to the fluxgate compass. First time it happened we were on a canal in Holland and the admiral called her friend on a nearby boat. It gave us quite a fright.

As I said, am I causing this ... ?

Thank you for your posts so far. The third time this occured (no auto, just me, hands on) I was at the helm and had to turn hard to port to correct the heading. What I do NOT know is what my rudder indicator said was the rudder position at the time. Again, thanks for your comments. And no, no adult beverages were involved. :>), Jeff
