I have very little experience with diesels but do Like our Yanmar. When the day comes for our next boat engine make will be a big issue.

I have my second Hunter both had with Yanmar and so happy that it doesn't take much to keep them running well and so Yanmar and Hunter gets my vote.
Zeehag maybe tell some other Yanmar owners what tricks we do to keep them trouble free.

I have the same engine, 1979 vintage. If I had just spent 10 grand to repower, I would be delighted at the way it runs. I never would have believed a 2 cylinder, 2 blade prop, setup could be so smooth. First start in the spring is always just like I was in the middle of a summer daysail after it had already been running to get off the mooring.

This engine truly deserves a place on the all time list of great pieces of machinery designed and built by man.

Story goes...

...that Yanmars were developed to pump water in the rice paddies 24/7.

I would add to list of things: Replace impeller annually, Run engine hard at 80% of rated capacity, Replace mixing elbow every 5 years regardless.

Karen, I have a 3 GMF, '85 vintage.. Same story. Excellent piece of machinery. As Roger says, oil, filters... clean fuel .. Check/clean/replace exhaust ell very 10 years.. if in salt water. Check/adjust valve clearance at same time as ell.. Raw water impeller change based on usage..

2qm15 ..... when i got my s-2 home to georgia ...it had been sitting for a very long time dont know for sure .....it was an off spring of hurrican ike so i know it had been down for at least 18 months ...and from the looks of the boat maybe years longer ......rusted up and in need of a lot of things ...sprayed wd-40 all over the external parts and let it sit for a day ....hooked up battery power to it and tryed starting it had to give it a few rounds but it fired up and ran ..not smooth mind you but it ran ...fuel tank was almost full of very dirty and old fuel .....so i removed it and took it apart from the head down to the conecting rods ..... mic the rod throughs and the bearing and every thing was with in non replace tolarrences...one valve was not seating properly and that valve guide was a little sloppy ....but wat impressed me was how well buitl the little bugger was ....damn thing looked to be explosion proof...and i am rebuilding the top end ...water passages were clogged with a lot of real nasty and hard crap so i boiled it all out and started dry cleaning it wiith a ice pic and bead blasted it all...must have got 1 1/2 cups of crap out by picking the passages...i will put i back together with new top end parts about $600.00 worth to be exact and do an injector and pump cleaning and calabration as well ...and i have no doubt that it will be cood for another 15 to twenty years or so ...but i will be changing to a gm20f ...due to the hot water heater need..... but the 2qm15 engine is one impressive engine.....

regards

woody

when i first got my ericson, the man i bought her from had placed automotive gasoline engine parts on her --yipes--i took her imediately into the yanmar dealer/distributor here in sin diego--elias owns this place--he had his crew work the 600 hour overhaul in 2004......has been perfect ever since--i have had a tachometer installed and a coupla oil changes since--i have added maybe 100 hours to her--she is awesome!!! always turnkey and always there for me when i need her---makes life so much easier with a good running engine.....had fun getting her to the yanmar dealer--sucked the air cleaner on the way, making oily black smoke-- and we ended up sailing into the dock--that,we found out, is an absolute NO_NO in sin diego----lol--no one is allowed to sail their boat into a work dock--go figger---but we showed them how and was perfect----

change oil every 100 hours or yearly and make sure the impeller is good and so far--so good--lol i love her!!!! runs so cool the water heater i am sure never got hot--lol---so i removed it --sunshowers are best anyway..water heaters tend to leak..so all is awesome...

Don't forget the impeller and fuel filters.
I only forget them online. A new RW pump impeller every spring.

One tip on the QM is that there are 3 zincs. It's easy to miss the one on the aft end of the engine because it's on a cover instead of a plug and looks different. I get about two seasons out of a set. There's plenty left then but they aren't expensive.

Does anyone have tips or advice specific to the 3JH2E? Impeller is difficult to remove due to placement close to starter motor.

Friend has a 4 cylinder one and used a long 90 bent needle nose to get the impeller out.. Don't know if you have the exact clearance problem.. Pliers look like this..
http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-t...traight-90-angle-long-reach-pliers-33203.html
Grabbed impeller by one vane and tapped the pliers back by the handles to work the little rubber bugger out.. Not exactly easy, but it works. Ya may have to shorten teh nose a little.. Nigel Calder wrote about doing this in Cruising World (I think) a while back.. Good luck ..

RE: RW Impeller...

I unbolt my RW pump from the engine, disconnect the hoses, and work on it at the dinette table. Replaced the phillps head screws with 4 mm metric bolts (shortened the shanks) so getting the cover off is easy. Never had any problem removing the impeller with a pair of wide gap pliers-slides right off the shaft with a little waterproof grease previously applied.

Gotta do a valve adjustment as soon as I get the necessary valve cover gasket and others.

Roy: I cut out the side of my engine compartment and put in an access door. This was just so I could "SEE" the damn cover. Then I replaced the bolts and cover with a Speed Seal. Then you need to get a set of needle nosed pliers with a 90 deg bend. This "HELPS" in removal of the impeller.

I really do not know about trying this if the impeller fails after the engine has been running for several hours, but it has got to be better than hanging over a hot engine in the middle of a water way.

Dan: The GM engine is a breeze compared to the JH series when dealing with the impeller.

The new YM engines now have the cover on the forward side of the engine making the entire process much easier.

The only problem with the QM series is the lack of parts availability. Garylinger's 2QM15 had a cracked head, irreparable and none to be found.

A slight correction to what Bob said, there was a head available but it was new and I didn't want to spend the more than $2500 to put a new head on a 30 year old engine that had extensive corrosion inside the water jacket. It seemed to be more cost effective to replace it with the Beta-Marine. While I was still replacing parts on the Yanmar, I used Torresen Marine and it seemed that most, if not all parts were available for a price.
