I shall not pass this way again---
Although it bordered be with flowers,
Although I rest in fragrant bowers,
And hear the singing
Of song-birds winging
To highest heaven their gladsome flight;
Though moons are full and stars are bright,
And winds and waves are softly sighing,
While leafy trees make low replying;
Though voices clear in joyous strain
Repeat a jubilant refrain;
Though rising suns their radiance throw
On summer's green and winter's snow,
In such rare splendor that my heart
Would ache from scenes like these to part;
Though beauties heighten,
And life-lights brighten,
And joys proceed from every pain---
I shall not pass this way again.
Then let me pluck the flowers that blow,
And let me listen as I go
To music rare
That fills the air;
And let hereafter
Songs and laughter
Fill every pause along the way;
And to my spirit let me say:
"O soul, be happy; soon 'tis trod,
The path made thus for thee by God.
Be happy, thou, and bless His name
By whom such marvellous beauty came."
And let no chance by me be lost
To kindness show at any cost.
I shall not pass this way again;
Then let me now relieve some pain,
Remove some barrier from the road,
Or brighten someone's heavy load;
A helping hand to this one lend,
Then turn some other to befriend.
O God, forgive
That I now live
As if I might, sometime, return
To bless the weary ones that yearn
For help and comfort every day,---
For there be such along the way.
O God, forgive that I have seen
The beauty only, have not been
Awake to sorrow such as this;
That I have drunk the cup of bliss
Remembering not that those there be
Who drink the dregs of misery.
I love the beauty of the scene,
Would roam again o'er fields so green;
But since I may not, let me spend
My strength for others to the end,---
For those who tread on rock and stone,
And bear their burdens all alone,
Who loiter not in leafy bowers,
Nor hear the birds nor pluck the flowers.
A larger kindness give to me,
A deeper love and sympathy;
Then, O, one day
May someone say---
Remembering a lessened pain---
"Would she could pass this way again."

I shared poetry with my mother, or it would be truer to say she shared it with me. In the past weeks I have spent a great amount of time ready Walt Whitman, William Wordsworth, and Percy Shelly with her. She was strong four days ago. We sat outside and talked, mostly about my son Mico. The next day she went down hard, could not get out of bed, but was able to recognize us when she could not recognize and often not respond to the staff. I moved her from San Antonio to be with me last year when she was diagnosed with cancer again. She had survived it 4 times but did not want treatement this time. She passed at 7:45 this evening and this is the last poem I read to her. I will miss her.

I know this is not sailing related, but I like this community and it is comforting to write about this tonight.

Recess.. and good you should! my grandmother kept a similar poem on the wall at eye level by the door leaving her room. it read, " I shall pass this way but once, any good therefore i can do or any kindness i can show, let me do it now. let me not defer nor neglect it, for i shall not pass this way again."
You've got the right place. my condolences to you and your's. jimbob

I'm so sorry, Dave...

I've walked in your shoes three times...first with my husband, then my mother and most recently my father. So many mixed feelings.... You and your family are in my prayers.

I have been an orphan for about ten years now and I feel your pain, remember her well and the things she taught you. That is her finest legacy. My mother taught me to forgive, to love and to value the love of others.

My deepest sympathy

To you and your family. I know how hard this can be. I have lost my father, brother and sister over the years. I understand your heartbreak. You will never forget, but you will live on.

Thank you all. It is something we all go through, but still never easy. I am very fortunate to have had a year with her. We were always close and I would always go see her in San Antonio but it is not often you are given a notice that you only have so long with your parent. My mother loved to sail, but this last year was not in the cards for us to sail. She wanted to but was in to much pain and the shifting around would not have been good.

CROSSING THE BAR

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For though from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

It is the Joys between the sorrow for which we live. Sadness is there to remind us that we Do have joy. I pray that you only remember the Joy of your mother.

My wife and I both feel your pain. Cancer is a horrible thing maybe surpassed only by the cures which are at the very least barbaric. My own mother is a breast cancer survivor and my wife is in the middle of 12 double rounds of chemo after extensive bowel surgery for ovarian cancer.
God bless you and everyone who is affected by this sad and tragic disease!

Thank you Bill.

I hope all goes well for Valerie and she gets through the chemo quickly. My older sister and I talked my mother into having chemo about three years ago. She did not want to have to go through it again but she was otherwise very healthy. It is a very hard thing to see happen. It takes so much out of the person, both physically and mentally. Both my father and mother went through it. The great news is the treatment have got better. My mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, she was in remission for almost 20 years before it returned.

I must add a poem that was left at my son's grave.

To Those I Love and Those Who Love Me

When I am gone, release me, let me go...
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears;
be happy we had so many years.

I gave to you my Love, you can only guess
how much you gave to me in Happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown
but now it's time I traveled on alone.

To grieve a while for me if grieve you must;
then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a while that we must part,
so bless the memories within your heart.

I won't be far away, for life goes on;
so if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see me or touch me, I'll be near
and if you listen with your heart, you'll hear,
all of my Love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you must come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile and say,
"Welcome Home"

Beautiful poem, Dave. My condolences to you and yours. It's been nearly 20 yrs since my mother went pretty much the same way. Her last year was spent at my sister's house with outpatient hospice care and her Alzheimers mercifully kept her from realizing how sick she was. I still get a lump in my throat when I water the Azaelia that she rooted for me in a Mayo jar or think of the psychic bond we shared or that she never really got to know my son(the youngest of her 10 grandchildren).
