We are coming up on Christmas and my wife asked for a boat related gift. She wants to be able to hang a hammock between the mast and the forestay. I have seen a hard plastic "U" shaped device that goes over the furled headsail that is made to spread the load. However I cannot recall the proper name for the device and I have been unable to locate one. My wife will appreciate any help and so will I.

sorry I dont know the name of the device but if you use a soft double braided line (1/2" or thicker) and turn a rolling hitch 3 or 4 times instead of 2 you would probably have a pretty disbursed load.

Try this
Take a short piece of 1/2" 3 strand nylon rope, and splice the two ends so that you have a loop. Lay this loop that you just made on your furled genoa and wrap it around about 3 or 4 times, until there's not much left. Pull the middle out thru the other end an you've made a non slipping hanger for your wife's hammock. If you tie the hammock to this loop with a sheet bend, it will only take seconds to setup and take down. If your wife is half as crazy about her hammock as mine is, you better accomodate her. '
