I'm getting ready to order two new sails, a jib/main for my Hunter 23(1986). The ones I have are the sails that came w/the boat. Do I need to say more? Okay, my kind of sailing is going to change since I have now a bigger faster boat, so I want to get into club sailing/coastal cruising(more on the latter one)so what are my options for each sail. Help

Find a sailmaker

Went throught the same process for my '77 h27 last summer. I used the web (including the Doyle stuff here) to identify companies that are in the business for my boat (Doyle, UK, North among others.) Then I phoned the local loft to talk with each one. My objective was to find a sailmaker who would take the time to evaluate Lady Lillie, her sails, and our sailing plans (daysail and week long cruises)and advise me from his knowledge and experience. I got quotes from 3 lofts after deciding based on that advice to buy a new main, and an APC. That kept the price competitive, but I made the decision to go with the Doyle loft nearby, because the sailmaker there best met my expectations for his involvement. He met the competitive prices, and delivered sails that exceeded our expectations on daysails at the end of the season. (5% less heel and over 1 kt faster with the new main.)

Racing your 23

I am racing my 86, hunter 23. I also need a new main, but doing ok for now with the old sail. If you are looking for any racing information you can e-mail me at "wsdavis@fmtc.net" or find lots of info from Cliff in the archives. He helped me with rigging, balance and more. His e-mail is "cliffr@bright.net" That should take care of any racing info you may need. Don't know of anyone else racing a 23?

realistically

you sound more like a cruiser than a racer. and really (please no grief everyone) if you want to win races buy the best racing sails you can get, because that what your competetion is buying. that means mylar and that means expensive. that said, and i have done the same thing you are about to do, if you go the cruising route get 2 reef points in the main. lots of people will say waste of money but when it blowing 35 you will wish you had the second reef. think you wont be out then . think again. your experience will increase way faster than that sail will wear out . trust me if you are cruising you will see good wind and often . what do i do , i cruise my own boat and race on other peoples boats. it a great compromise to having two sets of sails. good luck mg
