Ok, so I have aquired a sailboat. Unfortuantely, I had a death in the family and now I have a sailboat I know nothing about. All I know is that it needs a good scrub down. Now that I have it, I might take up the art of sailing but I need to find out more about this particular boat. My extensive 'Googling' has let me find out that it is a daysailer but past that I'm not real sure. I'm not sure who made it or what year it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like

a flying scott. If it is, you might be able to get information from the manufacturer or the Flying Scott Sailboat Association http://www.fssa.com/index.html

standing at the stern(back) and looking forward

on the right hand side of the transom(the vertical part)there should be a pressed into the surface a series of numbers and letters. Those are the "hull identification numbers" they will allow a person to learn the details of the boat.

if they were there you could cover them with your

hand touching the little rub strip and the edge of the transom. Lacking that there may be a small plate inside nailed of screwed to a vertical piece of wood. Lacking that there may be some numbers and/or symbols of the main sail.

So if I was to find

said numbers, how would I use them. Is there a website I can type them in at?

Just google HIN

and you will get many hits that will explain all. The numbers you are looking for are about a half inch high. Edit to add; Actually Googling HULL IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS is better.

Boat Identification

Looks like a Flying Scot --great boat-- could be a Chrysler Product as well, mutineer or something. Lastly it has a Venture line to it. Check those out--do you have a sail logo, to show us. If you have the sail symbol we can solve it faster.---Beau

Sailing Assoc. and just doing it !!

I'm relatively sure that there is a sailing association, or something similar in your area.Make some calls to find one near you. Clean up your new to you boat, and haul it to the nearest one on the next windy Saturday morning. Someone there will probably be able to identify it for you, and may even be able to show you how to set everything up.If you're really lucky you may find someone that will help you learn to sail it. Better yet, just start putting the mast up, and someone will probably come along and tell you that you're doing it all wrong, and will take it upon themselves to do it for you. Once it's all rigged, just put it in the water, buckle up your personal flotation device, with the wind broadside to the sails, start sailing. You might also want to pick up the book "Sailing for Dummies" I did, and it was invaluable. I had never sailed until three years ago, and now I have 130 feet (5 sailboats) of boats and sail every chance that I get. It's not really important who made it, as any missing parts can be replaced with appropriately sized hardware. And as long as you don't use a motor, I don't believe you need to title it. That of course will depend on Georgia laws.

registration numbers.....

Sailboats over 12 feet that are used on public waters in Georgia must be registered with the Dept of Natural Resources. I noticed some numbers near the front of your boat which appear to be registration numbers. You should be able to backtrack them through the DNR to get a copy of the registration document, which will contain manufacturer info. Here's a resource to get you started. http://www.boat-ed.com/ga/handbook/register.htm I'm betting your trailer will require registration also.. you can research that.

not a buccaneer or mutineer

My best guess is Flying Scot. Look them up on the web, I'm sure they have a group website.

Update

Thanks for all the responses! Alright....so I got up in the boat after I didn't see the HIN on the back. I found a panel in the center of the boat that said "Tanzer Ind. Limited made in Canada" In addition I also found what may be a serial # T1673699. Now since it was made in Canada....made me think that it probably wouldn't have an HIN. I did some research on Tanzer and found out that they didn't make that many boats and went bankrupt. Does anyone know where I may use this serial number to find out more.

Hmm....

Ok...now upon more googling....would one agree with me that this serial probably would be saying it is a Tanzer T16 made in 1973?

TAN

If this boat was built pre-1972 it might not have any HIN but it may have a serial number of some sort because a standard HIN wasn't required pre-1972. The HIN for a Tanzer Ind. Ltd. should begin with "TAN" and then some numbers.

Owner's Manual

Here is an online version of the owner's manual for the Tanzer 14, 16, and overnighter which should come in handy. Enjoy and happy sailing. In addition to the link, the entire site is dedicated to the Tanzer and full of good information. http://www.clal.ca/tanzer16/

Tanzer is NOT still in business!!

Tanzers made in Canada in 1973 would display the numbers you related - Tanzer 16, 1973, hull/sail number 699.
