I have a 1984 Hunter 34 and I need to replace the port screens. The ports are Gray Enterprises and I have taken measurements of the screens that I need but I don't understand the measurements (inside diameter, cutout size, base outside diameter, spigot lentgh, angle or straight spigot, etc.) that the web site is asking for. My screens (not the ports) measure 3 7/8" x 13 7/8" and 4 7/8" x 11 7/8". Can someone tell me what I need to order to replace these. Thanks,

Those are the Gray 4 X 14 's and the 5 X12 's .. Order the screens for those and ya should get the correct ones.. Hot enuf for yall down on Vermillion Bay? This site may have the screens or ya may have to go to Pompanette directly to get the screens I think the part numbers are GS414-28 and GS512-28.. http://www.pompanette.com/pompweb.n...d730fe8995d8eee085256c450057db03?OpenDocument
The diagram on this site is incorrect, but if you order screens for 414's and 512's you'll have the right screens.. http://shop.hunterowners.com/detail.htm?fno=0&group=647&cat=2005

Another way to go is to take the plastic ring with the screen home. Pull off the old screen and sand the perimiter. Buy a roll of screen at the hardware store that matches the removed screen. Place the ring on a sheet of plywood. Pull the screen across the ring and staple to the plywood so as not to have any wrinkles. Take a tube of cement and coat the ring right though the screen (press the nozzle right on the screen). When dry trim out with razor blade or ultility knife. Presto- new set of screens for under $15.00

Ian, I have been trying to figure out how to do just that for 3 months. That is such a simple solution. Thank you very much.

If your frames are NOT broken, you can just replace the screen.

Get a putty knief or wood chisel and scrape off all of the old screen from the frame. Get some fiberglass screen from your favorite home improvement store and some "airplance" glue. Put a small bead of glue around the frame and place the screen over the frame. Once it dries, just trim off the screen and you are ready to go.

If you frames are broken call Dave at SBO.COM. He seems to be able to resolved these problems without much ado.

Repair instead of replace port screens

This might be too late, but in case you have not ordered yet from Pompanette, you can repair the port screens if the frame is not broken. I did all the screens of my H-34 and saved a bundle.

Easy to do: 1) Buy enough fine mesh fibreglass screen from your local hardware store to do all the screens (6 X 5" X 12" & 3 X 4" X 14"). Get a little more so screen will be larger than frame.
2) Take the screens out and bring them where you can lay them flat.
3) Scrape off the damaged screen with a rasor blade, being careful not to cut into the frame plastic. Clean frame with a solvent. I used Acetone but you need to be very careful as it will eat into the plastic.
4) Cut out a piece of screen larger than frame by 1/2" on each side and lay it flat on the table.
5) Put a fine line of glue (Contact cement worked for me) all around the side of the frame where the screen will be and lay the frame on the piece of screen with some dead weight placed so all sides have even pressure on top of them.
6) Let dry 24 hours, then cut off excess material and voila: inexpensive new screen !
Note: I had 2 frames that were broken but otherwise intact. I did them anyway to try out and they are still in usage !
Good luck
