I am ready to upgrade the alternator mount. Has any one done this on there engine? With this upgrade you need to replace 4 of the 5 studs that go through the exhaust manifold/expansion tank. You know the ones, they are being used for wiring grounds and solenoid mount. How do I either take off the expansion tank or remove the studs that have about 6 threads sticking out? The new studs are longer for the new mount. See the related link.

M25 Alternator Bracket Replacement
Chuck Use this link. Happened to me! I also did a replacement for a friend with an Ericon 32, same engine. On his, we had to remove the thru bolts. Just grab 'em with a BIG vise grip AFTER you spread a lot of Liquid Wrench on the old ones. Clean the outside surfaces so the liquid wrench doesn't make the vise grips slip. Don't worry about the old one's threads, they're toast anyway. You do NOT need to take off the manifold. Just take the bolts off, they go right through, NO leaks. Good luck. PS, also use the C34 website's search engine to find more about alternator brackets than this one link. PPS BOTH the C30 (www.catalina30.com) website and the C34 website (www.c34.org) have comprehensive engine information available.

Maybe an EASYOUT will work
Hi Chuck, Looks like an EASYOUT (left handed treaded hardened tool) used to remove broken studs will work. Should be able to get EASYOUT at Auto Parts store. Available in different sizes depending on stud size. You drill a hole in the stud and insert the EASYOUT. Bob

Bracket Replacement
Chuck I did this replacement this past summer. The most difficult part was taking the studs out. I had to replace the studs because after the new bracket was placed against the expansion tank the existing studs were too short. You do not have to remove the tank. I replaced the studs 1 at a time. Some studs were difficult to get out so ultimately I had to use vice grips to grip the old studs and break them free. I was carefull not to put too much torque to break the studs. One more for Vise Grip
I recently completed the same repair on my M-18 (Cat27) - this is the exact same upgrade kit and exhaust manifold configuration. As the other respondents have mentioned, a vise grip is sufficient to get the old studs out - really not a big problem. Of course, the manifold may pop off (in my case) - therefore, it is better to drain the coolant. It is also a good idea to check all parts of the upgrade kit for good fit - particularly the eyes connecting to the alternator: my kit needed some bending and filing, which was much easier done in my shop ahead of time. double nut the stud and use a wrench on the locked nut, be sure to get the double nut as far in as you can so you don't snap the stud, reverse process to install new studs

I went to the boat with vice grips in hand. Well they came out with very little effort. It's hard to beleve that the exhaust manafold/expansion tank is held on by six 1/4" studs that are threaded into the engine with about only 6 threads.
