I Need a Vega

Sounds as though she is a very typical Vega that has not been cared for a year
or so. The great thing about Vegas is that they are quite easy to renovate and
bring up to scratch. As they are only 27 feet you can see the work you have
done. At teh worst case you will nneed a new set of sails which would cost
about $2000 US but you can always use the original sails which are probably
newer than the boat as she has furling gear which was not standard when they
were bulit. As she has a MD6B you will not have the troubles with a Dynastart
(MD6B uses a proper starter) and she will be a failry late one (1976 ish).
I am
afraid I have no idea of prices in the USA or Canada as I live in the UK .

I don't own one yet - but I seem to be consistently drawn toward
the Albin Vega - I need help with decision making in regard to a:
1976 Albin Vega
Neglected for a year or more
Cockpit seats rotten - need replacing
70's era electronics (depth sounder & VHF)
Original MD6B Volvo diesel works (produces fair amount of
greyish smoke.
Some, but not too much, coolant water seems to be circulating
through the engine - is this normal?) Some work done on engine
in 1992 (Don't seem to have been a rebuild)
Combi gearing system seems to be working okay (tried forward
and reverse)
Doesn't seem to be any mast compression problems
Has Jib furling system
Deck and associated hardware seem fine
Condition of sails - don't know for sure.
Has original kerosene stove and a kerosene heater (wife is
worried about kerosene).
1994 Paint looks good.

??? What would be an appropriate offer for this boat in Canadian
(preferred) or US dollars????

Dear Mr McMurdoj,

From you brief discription I conclude that the engine in not in order.

The cooling water certainly must not remain in the engine!!! It will
ruin the diesel.

In Holland we have a fine service of the ANWB, the cousins of your AAA
whose have a maritime division and journal too. They check such purchases
(at a price! ) before you buy it.


Normally, the MD6 engine is fine, provided there is annual maintanance.
Did you ask for invoices for the previous maintanance??
Probably none available. Which wharf maintained the engine, they have
records.

The trouble with most Vegas is that the propellor shafts leak plenty
of income water. I have to pump my Vega every week, otherwise the
batteries will be flooded.
It \'\'ýour\' Vega dry. What is the propellor shaft copper or has it been
replaced by stainless steel.

As you hear those things should be inspected by an expert.
