I need a primer on the types and uses of blocks

I am trying to learn about why blocks are configured as they are, what particular ones are used for, how they function. Any one have a site or source for this info?

Just take a look...

...at various sailboats in your marina to see how others deploy their snatchblocks. It works for them.

Rigging

The best source I found was a Harken Catalog. They show almost all uses for block and tackle and have some great rigging ideas.

Try this.

Go to "Rigging Only"(Related Link). Scroll down the left side until you see "BLOCKS". For each type they have pictures and a sentence or two about their use.

Manufacturers catalogs - the price is right!

They're free for the asking and there's usually a stack of them gathering dust in West Marine and BoatUS. The Harken, Ronstan and Schaefer catalogs are all pretty good. Peter H23 "Raven"
