I need a 4 legged boat buddy

He needs to be smallish, house broke, not too much of a shedder, mellow and friendly. I drive between Houston & San Francisco where I keep my boat every other month so it has to love to travel. If you know someone who meets this criteria and is looking for a good home, let me know. I will provide a great life for the right dog.

Get a Minature Schnauzer. Best boat dogs out there. Ours loves to travel and go to the boat. She weighs 12 lbs and only stands 14" at the top of her head. She took 2 weeks to housetrain and will stay in her crate if the wether pipes up down below. She is 9 months old and is a seasoned salt.

Standard Schnauzer. They are non-shedding, not overly fond of water (good if you around water), great temperament, not yappy (pisses off the neighbors), smart (sometimes smarter than the owner). They are big enough to get on/off the boat by themselves. Little dogs have a time boarding and de-boarding. Ours weighs about 45 lbs. She also has a bladder that will outlast most beer drinkers. Not unusual to go 6-8 hrs without draining the tank.

We have had two of them and I must tell you that they are one of the best breeds that I have been around.

Consider a greyhound - short hair, well mannered, great with visitors and children, non-aggressive. I take mine sailing all the time. It’s a rescue. I have rescued greyhounds since 1997.

I support the opinion that Schnauzers are great boat buddies. I have a Minature Schnauzer. They don't shed, love kids, have a good disposition, are the size you indicated that you want, like to have fun, are very smart and trainable, can be layed back, and are really clean dogs. My dog likes swimming, sleeping, playing, chasing balls, boating and car travel (ooops that sounds like a dating site ad!!).

Go to your local animal shelter... they have a pretty wide assortment and one will probably speak to you....All the dogs I've ever owned were pound or shelter animals, and they're often a lot brighter, friendlier and healthier than the puppy mill dogs or purebreds....

Coming about is her favorite thing. When I call out "Prepare to come about" she is up and at em. I keep a Potty Pad aboard for sailing over 2-3 hours

I concur. All my dogs have been from pounds or rescue. My current dog is a purebred Mutt.

And I agree with everyone else, a pound dog is the way to go, but you need to be careful and perhaps bring someone with you to resist the temptation to adopt them all! Around here, once a month the animal shelters and county animal services department all gather in the parking lot at the local mall and hold an 'adopt-a-thon'. Makes it nice since you only have to drive to one place to see them instead of visiting each facility separately. Pretty much a mixed bag of everything from purebreds to some of the wildest mixes you have ever seen. We wound up finding a 6 week old Catahoula Leopard dog that is the sweetest thing you have ever seen, and smart as a whip. Don't know how I will teach it to retrieve the jib sheets for me, but at least now I have a goal!
