Take the lines to your boat, fasten the two shackles together and put each line on a primary winch. Crank them good and tight and then milk the cover down over the bit of core. It might pull down and cover it with just the tension

A suggestion. Next time use a long eye splice. The only way to remove that shackle is with a knife. A long eye splice allows you to change or remove shackles without cutting the line. This is particularly true for halyards where you will want to end for end it.

Depending on how high you can hoist your sails, you might want to keep your splices small like you did or they could jam in the sheaves. I'd also whip the splices for extra strength.

Splicing braid that has been in use is a lot tougher. That could be the problem.

Picts are of good side and bad side.

If you cut some of the sheath threads on the length that is buried it will taper the splice. You do this gradually over the splice length, look up some instructions on how to taper an eye splice in double braid. It also makes burying the core a lot easier. To milk the core tie the line to a cleat on the dock maybe 10 feet from the end, then milk the core over that length.
