The wind is clearing hitting the sail from the direction of the camera... and the mast is behind the sail.... to leeward.

Are we looking at the same boat?
It just doesn't look that way to me. There is no mast impression from the sail being pushed against it. During the shunting, the sail seems to be held off the mast instead of pressed against it.

@rgranger yes we are.
My conclusion is based on watching the whole video. The sailor is sitting on the ama balancing the force of the wind against the sail. If the wind was coming from the position of the camera as suggested the boat would be unbalanced and flip into the water burying the sailor under the sail.

I agree that the lighting on the sail makes it appear as you describe.

I suggest it is the deep curve in the leach of the sail that makes it look curved the other way. Traditional Oceanic crab claws are cut very deep. Even billowing out towards the viewer at an angle, it can have a concave shape.
