The 26X is a better sailer and sells 18 to 23k. The 26M is more comfortable.
My friend bought a used Mac power-sailor last year, and his research seemed to confirm this, so he bought a 26X.

Of course if the OP is only going to motor, the sailing capability is moot...

The Mac provides the most cabin space for the money. It is a poor sailer and not much of a power boat but with a small engine at 5 knots it will hardly be noticeable. If the intention is not to sail the boat I honestly think it would be an excellent choice for puttering around in comfort. Why pay for a boat with good sailing qualities if you don't need them.

I looked at the macgregor powersailors and decided that the build fit, and finish are kind of rough (read cheap) and the narrow beamed 26m is said to have stability issues, that being said, there are an awful lot of them out there. The reason the used prices are higher than the "new" price is the upsells, Mac dealers charge extra for things like backstays, handrails, porta potty, galley, instruments. What you get for 22 grand will just barely sail away from the dock. I own a Lancer powersailor and other than a fixed keel and ballast is right up your alley, one thing though, companionwar steps can be hard on the knees.

Doc- God bless and enjoy the water any way you like. I am getting up there too and many times I am in the ICW and frankly don't care to spar with other boats so I motor. I see these trawlers at 6-7 knots all the time and can motor right along with them. If you have you sails in place you will be surprised at the ease with which you can deploy your head sail and use engine as well if you like. There are no rules. I admire the purists and they deserve accolades for using the boat as designed but as we get older and not all that nimble I think they will just be happy to see us out there. If you are happy sailors are happy. BTW you made a good choice for a boat for what you wish to do.
