is it wet yet?

is the boat in the water or is it still in the parking lot? if it is in the water, is it above the surface? these are important questions that need answers if we are to provide any ASSistance

Give him a break

Everyone is a beginner at one time. Hugh, if you're not joking with everyone, go out and get a few lessons from either a sailing school or someone who has some experience. It won't take long. A couple of lessons and you'll get the hang of it. Good Luck

Hugh,Email me

i will try to help you out.it does not take much to make your boat move..dont let these ego's here spoil your adventure.they are like anyone else you see and meet.some here are very intellegent and love to help others get in the sport.and it is possable to have a boat with a problem..i ahve been sailing for years and have three sailboats.i sail two of them fine. but i have an old hunter25 that has a nasty personality and i somtimes cant get it to go very well also..i believe some intelligent sailor screwed with the keel..now i get a 20 percent heel and you could walk faster than the boat..while the oday will fly like the breeze..anyhow email me i will try to help you out...thats what this fourum is REALLY supose to be about.and i am still learning EVERYDAY!..wes81461@yahoo.com

Ah, Wes,

Most of us are answering Hugh in the same vein as his post. But we could be wrong.

wes and john, I believe you have taken...

...the bait and Hugh is about to set the hook. Gots to get on back to the house, cuz.

You got me.

I guess I'm a victim of the sophisticated humor of the contributers to this forum. Clearly, the winter has finally gotten to everyone. It must be time to get back out on the water. If not, there's a lot of comedians out there in fear of losing their jobs to some of the sharp minds that post here.... NOT!

Try mounting a BIG HIGH HP. outboard! Everyone knows the bigger the motor, the faster your sailboat is bound to go. Right? ;D Bryon Thomas "Shore Leave"

Y'all needs ta get a bigger motor...

if ya's figger bout 5 horsepower pur foot a boat length, ya'll be doin good. So a twenty footer gets a hunert horser, a twenty six footer gets a 135, jus like wiff a car ya needs all da power ya can get to makes it go fast! Iffen ya aint gots nuff power ya cand go no where! an doan worry none bout them dang sale thingies, they's jus fer dekurashun, anyhow. They jes gets in the way and makes a lot o noyse flappin in da winn! makes it hard ta here da staireo! If ya wanna put em up to look gude to da womens, go head, but thaes more of a pane in da butt dan thaes wurth, ifs ya ask me! Ifs ya aint got da doe fur a motor, ya can gets ya a bunch a good swimmin dogs an tie em to da front of da boat, sorta like dem eskymoe snoe sled guys do. Labadoors is rele good fer this! get ya a bunch of sticks an jus keep throein em in da drecshun ya wanna go! It work reel good, trust me! Jeff Bob in Poelok Pines

Hugh's PLight

I was party to a similar event Hugh. My non sailing friend bought an old Pearson 22 and begged me to go sailing with him. When I arrived at the dock, my friend was attempting to get his act together. A casual observation did not reveal any problem (although I must admit that I did not look to closely because we were not going far and I can swim). My first thought of a problem came when his 8 hp outboard was running like hell but the boat was not. Eventually we raised the sails. There was little current at the time but a fair breeze. The boat heeled over OK but did not move. I leaned over the side and looked down at the waterline. It looked as though the hull had never been cleaned. He had enough stuff down there to have an oyster roast for all our readers. So check the condition of the hull, take a lesson or two, and don't worry about all the jokes that are made at your expense. It's all part of the fun.

It’s NOT as hard as it looks

Hugh I bought the first sailboat I’d ever been on in the water last February. As soon as the Nebraska water got soft I got a sailing friend to take me out a couple of times. This my second year I’m far from an expert, but I came get her to move in the direction I want. So as many have said, don’t despair, and ask some to go with you it’s NOT as hard as it looks.
