I have run into some trouble while refinishing the cabin table.

New owner of a 1990 Hunter Vision 32. The cabin table had a few scratches in it, so I decided to refinish it. It also had a small white spot on it. I figured a drop of bleach had got on it or something, and that I would be able to sand the blemish away. About 10 minutes later, I end up with what you see in the picture. What is happening? Is this not real wood? Did I ruin the table?

It looks like you sanded through the outer decorative layer of the synthetic plastic laminate. Hunter uses lots of man made products that are suppose to look like wood but don't really. Sorry to tell you that you created a permenant man made blemish on your table. You can glue another piece of plastic laminate over the existing one as long as the original one is adheared properly to the structure below it.

If you you dont have the tools or time to make the repair yourself, remove the table top and take it to a formica shop for repairs. If you cant find a shop ask a cabinet company for help in finding one. Formica is an easy product to repair if you have the basic tools and knowledge. Good luck with it. I have been replacing tops on our O'day 34 over the winter.

I sanded down the table top on my hunter 35.5 legend and it looked like crap...very uneven...it is a laminate and very thin so my main concern was not going thru the liminate....anyway I applied coats of dalys seafin teak oil....the first few coats left a very uneven finish that kind of worried me....after 6 coats it all evened out and I have to say for a anal accountant it looks great...if that table were mine I would invest $10 in a can of sea fin and try that rather than remove the table and start over....which you may have to do ....good luck

That looks like a thin wood veneer to my eyes. You may be seeing the substrate (plywood?) beneath the thin veneer. If I'm right, you could experiment with some wood stain and try to get an acceptable match. It won't be perfect but close enough, you could seal the whole top with a clear low gloss and you might find it acceptable.

It could be re-veneered as well. If it is a plastic laminate, likely it will be easiest to just have another sheet applied.

You sanded through the face veneer, Only way to repair it now is to resurface it with another veneer or some other sheet good like Formica. Most of the modern veneers are only about 1/32" or less, so there easy to sand through.

I had a V32. I varnished the table top. It is a wood laminate. I would remove the table and take it to a cabinet person to install a laminate over it. I would not use a Formica-type product. That table is a lot of visual below and you want it to look good. Good luck.

Rick D,
It looks like the table is actually veneered. Is it the same situation for the bulkheads and floorboards?

If you do go with a pressure sensitive veneer, surface prep is critical. I has to be absolutely clean, no wax, and NO silicone product has ever been used on the table, whatever finish may still be present has to be intact and smooth. Use a veneer roller to apply as much pressure as you can. It's a good product in the right application, not so sure this would be the right place for it.

Yes, they are all veneer. Sorry, I misspoke when I said laminate. BTW, I varnished the interior.
