So like a good scout I went to their website and was vexed. That is the most impossible web site I have ever seen. That having been said I called their service number and after listening to a pleasant sounding woman on a recording and holding for about five minutes got a live person. things got better very quickly after that. I told him what unit I had and that at random times the screen would go blank except for a vertical blue line and a total loss of key function. He told me what the problem was. The soft ware gets into an endless loop when getting a fix. He said that disabling the WAAS function would degrade the accuracy some but would allow me to avoid removing the batteries and restarting the thing. I can't tell at this point how much I have lost in accuracy. But my waypoint for home seems to be just as good or bad as it has been.

no problems yet

Thanks for the heads-up, Ross. I also have a 72. No problems yet, but I'll try to remember the fix if I run into the same thing. How long have you had yours, and do you use it much?

SW update

Garmin is pretty good at fixing these things. Keep an eye on the website for a new SW version that fixes this issue.

I have had this a couple of years and always take it to

the boat mostly just to play with it. It serves well for checking set when crossing a tidal current. I can steer a magnetic course and it will display the coures over ground so that I can steer to compensate for the current.

It looks like they just released a new version in May that may have the fix you need. I am surprised the tech did not mention it. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=227
